Imperial Aces Campaign

By Englishpete, in X-Wing

So,

with the imminent availability of Imperial Aces I am thinking of starting a "campaign" for some of my local players.

The idea being is that they are all new pilots in the 181st Squadron and will start out as Alpha Squad Pilots in a PS1 Interceptor.

As we play scenarios, experience points will be awarded as follows.

1 XP for taking part in the scenario.

1 XP for completing the scenario without being shot down.

1 XP per kill made by your pilot.

a number of XP's based on the scenario objective.

XP's can be spent on;

upgrading your pilot skill by 1 point per XP spent, I will set max PS at 12, not 9.

buying upgrades at 1XP = 1 point of upgrade cost.

buying elite pilot talents at 1XP per 1 point of EPT cost.

To set some thresholds for people to aim at

You gain an EPT slot at PS 6 and another at PS 9. You may have 2 EPT's but may not use more than 1 per turn.

You may equip the Royal Guard Tie upgrade at PS4, but at the cost of 5 XP

On achieving 10 kills you may add the blood stripes to your ship and reroll 1 dice of your choosing per game.

On achieving 20 kills you may reroll 2 dice of your choosing per game.

If you are shot down during a mission you must roll an attack die. On a hit, you are considered wounded and must halve your PS (rounding up) for the next mission. If this takes you below the required PS for using EPT's, you may not use them that mission.

On the roll of a crit, you are dead and must start a new pilot.

It's a simple system, but should be fun.

Thoughts?

I like it and wish I was in your local area to play. Wish you luck.

this looks really cool, alot of organizing but i think it would be fun, Maybe to keep things simpler is just to upgrade to the next card, so alpha to avenger (i believe) then to saber then royal guard. I like the exp idea with upgrades but maybe just refrain from being able to buy ept and just have to upgrade to the pilot that can use them, So like alpha too avenger youll need 2 points of xp (i think avenger is 3) then 1 point to get saber or you could save up and just buy mods etc etc. I think it would be a blast esp with alot of people and everyone running different upgrades and such.

So, if I'm rerolling my dice for having 2 kills, can I still reroll those dice for other effects such as TL or Jonus/Krassis? Although looking through this, it looks like everyone is going to be flying only interceptors and only non-named ones.

People will be flying their own pilots, so no named pilots unless I as GM have one make a guest appearance.

The rule of only being able to reroll a die once still applies.

I am not worried about tracking upgrades, XP etc. I built a spreadsheet that does that and I have laminated 8" by 11" pilot cards that are bigger versions of Interceptor cards that let people write in the details of the pilot, so PS can be changed etc :-)

What about the rebel scum side.. I like your idea, but who plays them and how do they advance.. I figure the same way, but you didn't mention them so I was curious...

I, as GM will be the Rebel Scum, setting up scenarios and squads for my group to face.

Ahh... cool.. awesome idea for a bunch of imperial fans then.. hmmmm I may have to try this..

I would envisage the campaign running over a map for say 12-16 scenarios so it doesn't get stale.

I think you should multiply the XP by 10, and have 10 XP worth 1 upgrade point. That way you can add in things later, and balance other things now. For example if I hit a B-wing 6 times and someone else shoots it down, I could get awarded 5 XP for an assist while the one who shot it down gets the 10. Then, at your discretion, other things could have marginal points as well, like maybe 3 XP for using squad leader/swarm tactics on a teammate, 6 XP for using draw their fire, etc.

Just food for thought anyway. Sounds like fun either way, hope it works out for you.

Here is an example of the cards I'll make for my players. I'll change the PS and points as we play and reprint them.

You could have a mission called "Get Carter... the hell out of trouble!" ;)

Systems on interceptors is insane=}

Also, how do you consider veteran instincts?

Also, how do you consider veteran instincts?

I think that VI will work with the above rules. It occupies one of the limited EPT slots. And you can use only one EPT per round. So you need to decide during the activation phase at which PS you want to move. Keeping track of that could be a bit difficult.

If you are starting your players as members of the 181st fighter group? Then they would all be "Saber" squadron pilots, and most likely assigned to 3/181 where the least experienced pilots of the fighter group are first assigned.

PS:4 should be where they start because the 181st is an elite squadron pooling it's pilots from squadrons that have caught the eye or Colonel Fel, and Major Phennir. by showing they have what it takes to be elevated to an elite fighter group.

Alpha Squadron isn't technically a part of the 181st. Hence no blood stripes on the sides. Yes, I did read somewhere that "Alpha" was a squadron designation used by Fel after joining the unit, but after it was reorganized into a 3 squadron fighter group the "Alpha, Beta" designations were dropped for just "Saber" Which is the group designation for the Battle of Endor and there after.

Whist individual squadrons within the group were given even more specific call signs such as:

Colonel Soontir Fel

1st Squadron 181st Fighter Group (1/181)

Major Turr Phennir

2nd Squadron 181st Fighter Group (2/181)

Squdron C.O. un-named

3rd Squadron 181st Fighter Group (3/181)

None of this is to rain on the fun parade, just wanted to drop some "Nerd" facts about the group. You can run it anyway you want. :)

Love the 'geek' data :-) you can never have to much of that :-)

Also, I will allow VI to be permanently on the only exception to the use one or the other EPT per turn. Nice catch on that one.

I added system upgrades as in a campaign I want the players to have a slight edge and it is something extra to spend XP on.
