The Problem with Kir Kanos

By Stone37, in X-Wing

I love that he can spend evade tokens to add hits to his attack die roll. This is a fantastic ability. But where is the pilot, skill, crew, whatever, that can hand out evade tokens? The Rebels hand out Focus like an old van at a school bus stop! It is high time that the Empire had a way to pass around evade tokens! This should have been a part of the Lambda (to counter the HWK) IMHO.

Squad Leader helps. Something in the Defender pack involves Evade tokens.

But Squad Leader won't let a ship take a second evade token. I want a Imperial version of Kyle; cranking out evade tokens and passing them around!

There is always a wave 4 named that might be the "Evade" equivalent to Graven!

Fair point, but I still like him. A guaranteed hit if you don't need your Evade is pretty sweet. I just wish he could take PTL so he could boost/barrel roll to set those shots up.

True but then his point cost would have been more, and the way they did the Imp Aces there is 1 Royal Guard and 1 181st with a pilot skill slot and 1 for each without which keeps it even.

Kir Kanos and Carnox Jax should probably swap effects

Noooo. Carnor with Opportunist is going to be nice!

sadly not, his PS is too high, the target will likely still have it's focus when Carnor shoots so Opportunist will not kick in. Sure when you come close to Opportunists you have to think if you want to place the Focus you might not be able to use or do some other action, but as long as oppnent can stay at R2 Opportunist will be wasted on Carnor.

The Rebels have always had more/better synergy. It's a fairly standard game trope that the "good guys" work together better than the "bad guys" do, and the abilities reflect that in both quantity and quality.

have Howlrunner + squad leader follow Kir Kanos around?

An evade token factory (a la Kyle Katarn) would be a little too much parity between the factions IMHO. I like how the empire plays very differently from the rebs.

Plus, its not always about using his special ability every turn you can. For instance, if I evade with kir kanos and he a has a nice shot then it might draw enemy fire that would have gone else ware (perhaps drawing it away from a more vulnerable ship that doesn't have three green dice and an evade token) just to deny me the extra damage on my attack. If I have to use the evade token to dodge and not get the extra dmg? Who cares? I've forced my opponent to make a tough call, and the more often you can do that, the more likely it will be that your opponent makes the wrong call.

I think Kir would benefit a lot from the targeting computer upgrade. You could have him TL the target, then circle around in subsequent turns and fire at it with TL + evade

This. Kanos isn't likely to get many hits even with an evade because he has to take an evade for his ability. His card also says he can only use one evade at a time. He will average 1-2 hits including the freebie, especially because the ability doesn't work at range 1. So, his place isn't with other interceptors, it is next to Howlrunner in a TIE swarm. Howlrunner will squad leader a focus over to him, he will evade, then he will get four hits nearly every turn. Focus to increase hit chance, Howlrunner to reroll a blank, evade to add one damage.
