Need some help with my painting...

As the title says I need some help when it comes to painting a mini. I recently got this off of shapeways.

What I'm curious about is how do you all make your colored panels appear faded. Please keep in mind that I don't have an airbrush kit so that is out of the question. Thanks for any and all help and advice! :)

Washes. I use GW stuff. Black works best. Maybe a little dark brown in some places.

Thanks for the advice. If I'm wanting to make it appear as if the paint is faded would I do the same thing only using a lighter color?

So I figured this would be about as good of a place as any to put this. I started painting it today.

Here's the base coat it's a Flat Light Ghost Grey (Testors brand).

And here's the some of the upper color stripes. It's Exile Blue (Privateer Press brand).

Updates will follow once there's been some more progress. :)

Paint base color. Apply wash. Dry brush lighter color.

Sounds simple enough. How much lighter should I go?

DUDE! I'm only 9 minutes into this video, but this is totally something I'm going to try on a ship! Thanks for sharing. :)

Just don't strip it... it isn't necessary..

I have this exact same model; I sanded mine a little bit and regret not doing it more. Once you start to apply washes etc it has a very 'bobbley' effect! I've not finished mine yet, but I thought 'd let you know.

Can't wait to see more progress!

Do you have any pics of what it did to yours?

I usually prime black, dry brush white, base coat layer, dark wash( to fade) , then black line it .
