Opportunist + Gunner

Like every one else and their dog I am getting excited about the new Imperial Aces that should be out soon.

I was thinking about the different new upgrade cards that we are getting and this combination presented itself.

Gunner + Opportunist

I haven't made up my mind about opportunist yet. On one hand it does not cost your action - the usual hidden cost. It does cost a stress and 4 points.

At 4 points it needs to be an upgrade that gets used a lot in order to be worth its points. So I decided what it will gunner is going to be the way to guarantee you get to use it.

You take your shot, if it misses there is a good chance that your opponent used their evade or focus token to make it miss, then you get another free shot, and you can use your opportunist on.

If you fly alongside Captain Yorr, you can Opportunist on both shots [once each] ;-)

That's nine points of maybe...

maybe I'll use this 5pt upgrade... if I do I might use this other 4pt upgrade too!

I'm currently Math Winging the success/failure probability of Gunner, defining success as your first shot being 0 hit or >=2 hit, failures are 1 hit. I like the Oppurtunist idea, so I think I'll actually finish hashing out the numbers! Sounds great on Chewy or Kath.

Ahh, it does sound worse in that perspective.

Oppurtunist might be better as a standalone, combined with PS1 blockers, imo. Also, the YT and Firespray, anything that can use it on a k turning opponent.

I liked this until I realized your opponent would not spend the token intentionally (unless forced into having to obviously).

I don't think there is a ship you could run this on, but what about Gunner + Opportunist + FCS.

Focus for your action, attack, opponent uses focus or evade to dodge attack and activates Opportunist, gain target lock through FCS, attack again using Gunner and Opportunist with an extra attack die, use target lock to re-roll any blanks, use focus to change any eyeballs.

Oh well...

Some of my original musings made me want to put it on low PS ships so they could shoot second, but that won't work since Opportunist is an elite upgrade so you can only put it on higher PS ships.

I actually think the best place to put it would be on a YT-1300 so your 360 firing arc lets be able to pick from more ships to shoot at and hopefull have a shot at one without any tokens.

Over all I think paying 1 more point and getting a gunner is better than opportunist. So maybe we don't put it on ships that have crew options.

PS 4 pilots (Black Squadron, Sabers) in a list with a couple that are higher.

I'm looking forward to running Opportunist on GSP's, instead of missiles.

I don't always run double Falcons... but when I do, it's Lando/Chewie. Off the top of my head:

  • Lando Calrissian (44) + Draw Their Fire (1) + Gunner (5)
  • Chewbacca (42) + Opportunist (4) + C-3PO (3) + Millennium Falcon (1)

Could you put it on Tarn Mison (I can't remember if he has an EPT) he's going to be shooting late and will have a target lock on any one that has already shot at him which will combine nicely with opportunist. Starts to make him expensive though.

Opportunist might also work well with Ibtisam. You use Opportunist, she gets stressed and can reroll one die. And since she is "only" PS6 you might have higher PS ships shooting off focus or evade before she fires. Or just block your enemy with low PS ships.

If opportunist gets used a lot, i can see Advanced Sensors getting even better. Since you can't block AdS ships and then use opportunist on them.

It wouldn't work well against smart players. If spending an evade or focus token means my opponent might use gunner with opp, I'll pass on using it and take the hit -- heck, many players do this already to avoid the possibility of a more devastating gunner hit.

I agree, GSP gets much better with this.

Ah fair point, forgot about Yorr.

Yeah, not a fan of the combo. You can only use Opportunist on one attack, so it'd be easy to game it.

I'd rather use Opportunist on someone like Chewbacca with Nien Numb and Threepio. At PS5, Chewie attacks late enough that high PS targets may have already burned their tokens. Nien will let him burn off the stress, and Threepio takes a hard to kill ship and makes it even tankier.

Wedge and Wes were made for each other.

Wes + Veteran Instincts @ PS10

Wedge + Opportunist @ PS9

Add whatever other ship(s) and upgrades. But you use Wes to strip a the tokens to assure Opportunist to be used, then Wedge to make the most use of it.
