Now that 'Aces' are here...what next? How about 'Battle of Yavin'?

By xanderf, in X-Wing

I know. But I don't think Yavin is the right theme to add more Advanced pilots. They had to be completely made up.

The Tie Advanced needs a buff. The Y-Wing will get a lot of new toys with the upcoming releases.

There could also be a "Secret Development Facility" Pack with the Tie Advanced + various Pilots (but not Vader again) and Advanced only titles ... maybe even with a Tie Aggressor as an experimental light Bomber + experimantal state equipment ...

Imagine a Empire only "Interface for captured astrodroids as an unique modification ;)

Even better: "Droid Brain" upgrade.

Adds Astromech slot, allows ability of astromech to be applied to this fighter.

(TIE Advanced only?)

You got it. There are many possibilities.

The focus of a 'Battle of Yavin', this Epic battle, should be to fight on the surface of the Death Star and the trench run scene - and not to be abused as a fix for the Advanced.

No X-Wings, no TIE Fighters.

If it stays that way, bam. I'm sold.

I think that's a pretty important point, yes.

After all, we want this expansion to really appeal to both new players (which it would either way), as WELL as seasoned/experience players.

And what serious tournament player would not have tried Howlrunner and 6 Academy Pilots, yet? So they'll already HAVE at least 7 TIE Fighters, what would they possibly want with 2 more, when 8 is the most you can field?

Ditto the X-Wing fighters - any hardcore tournament player will have fielded a 4x X-Wing list at some point. So they'll already *have* 4 X-Wings...and will all but certainly be picking up the Medium Transport, so will shortly have 5 of them. Why would they want 7, when the most you could field in a tournament is 4?

Definitely, such a pack would have to exclude X-Wings and TIE Fighters, no doubt. (Now, the TIE Advanced or Y-Wing, on the other hand...most people only HAVE a single Advanced, for Vader. It's currently considered too overpriced to use, so few of them are in people's collections - plenty of room for adding another, assuming good pilots or upgrades!)

I consider myself a serious tourney player, yet I've never tried Howl + 6 AP. Even though I have 8 TIEs. Though that might have more to do with the fact that I rarely play imperial.

I sort of feel like the initial release was the Battle of Yavin. A couple of the TIE Pilots weren't there, but just about everything else was. X-wings, Y-wings, TIE Fighters, and TIE Advanced.

As for fixing ships, the Y-wing is far from broken. Y-wing span lists are pretty popular and pretty good.

I am not going to go into a debate over whether the TIE Advanced is broken or not, but Vader definitely isn't. (IMO he is the single best pilot in the game (before upgrades)). And if you want to do the battle of Yavin then Vader is really the only TIE Advanced present.

I really like your other ideas. I like expansions based around a certain scenario. I like a title card for the Y-wings. etc.

I dunno, when I think "Battle of Yavin", I tend to think about turbolaser towers, thermal exhaust ports, and trench run scenarios.

None of those things are in the game, yet.

Fairly important omissions!

The biggest problem is that while the Rebel Transport release is coinciding roughly in time with Imperial Aces and (roughly speaking) both improve one side's fighters, there's no parity at all with the huge ship release. So I think we can be pretty certain that FFG will bring out some giant Imperial ships at some point--which means in turn that the Transport is probably not the parity release for Imperial Aces.

WHATS URE PROBLEM WITH THE ADVANCED ??!!!

first of all YES GIVE ME BATTLE OF YAVIN SOUNDS GREAT !!!

second: i really dont have any clue why u call the advanced bad and not competative. i fly marek with 2 storm squadrons and 1 obsidian squadron pilot with cluster missiles on all advanced its a 100 point list that rocks and is veeeery competative in my opinion juist sayin.

i really think that Y wing and the advanced are well made. the better the commander that fields them the better the ship just sayin make gold out of *trash*

i would like to see more black squadron members like quorl and maarek in other tie variants rather then a tie advanced upgrade. and i would like to see new y wing pilots too.

Off topic - is it reasonable to report someone for butchering the English language?

On topic - I like the idea of seeing pilots in other ships, but only after they've exhausted the pilots we all know and love (well, maybe not all of us). I would love to see Corran in an X wing, but now that he's in an E wing, I'd rather see someone new in the X than a rehash of him. Like Qoryl. Or even Erisi. Or Rhys.

Imperial Aces is in stores, now - waiting on release date of the 14th, but several local stores have confirmed they received the shipments.

Latest news on the big ships (granted, from German distributors, so take with grain of salt) is that FFG was telling them to expect an August ETA on the Transport and Corvette.

I'm not sure I'd call a 6-month window a 'parity' release - indeed, we'll actually have 'Imperial Aces' AND wave 4 (some, anyway, via the 'Assault at Imdaar Alpha' event) in our hands before the first of the big ships arrive...

i'll take anything that gives the Imperials any kind of improvement, it's very dull that i always see the Empire represented by Tie fighters and Firesprays, the Bomber,Advanced,Shuttle and Interceptor are all pretty much sub obtimal where as the Rebels seem to have only 2 sub par ships which imo are the A-wing and HWK.

But I love the A-wing and HWK :'(

The HWK is the bomb. Especially in larger matches.

But I agree, I feel Rebels overall have better ships.

FFG, hire this man! That would be a great way to update the ships! Give the y-wings a title card that allows them to equip bombs! Also it should come with a 3x3 death star play mat!

NO!!!

No bombs on a Y-wing thank you.

Contrary to some video games, the Y-wing is not a bomber. It is an old fighter.

It is an old fighter - in the Age of Rebellion the Y-Wing got the role of a torpedo bomber.

With further modification the Y-Wing was capable of laying mined and drop proton bombs.

I think there was even a heavy modified 2-seater.

But I don't think we'll see bombs dropping Y-Wing soon.

I think there was even a heavy modified 2-seater.

A 2-seat variant would definitely be an interesting option to spice things up.

I don't *think* we saw any of those at Yavin, though.

Yeah but alot of people did play the rogue squadron games where it got a rep as a bomber. I understand that it is an old workhorse fighter but imo it makes the most sense out of all the rebel ships to be able to use bombs, plus I can think of some awesome shenanigans to be had with ion turrets and proton bombs!

When we get the Tie Aggressor, which should have a turret slot, we can talk again about a bomb slot for the Y-Wing.

Well, FWIW, when we saw the Y-Wing during the Clone Wars - both episodes, IIRC - it was used in a ground attack/bomber role.

Recall this scene, for example...

I could see a possible upgrade card...maybe a non-unique title?...that might allow for that being something like 'Ground Attack Fighter: This upgrade takes up two "torpedo" upgrade slots, and adds a single "bomb" upgrade slot to the ship upgrade bar.'

And over the ages, the Y-Wings lost their hull plating?

And over the ages, the Y-Wings lost their hull plating?

Not so much, it's just...

Well, I mean, the Rebels were taking anything and everything they could find and get flying. The fighter predated the Clone Wars, so...by the Rebellion period...the Y-Wing would have been a - what - 30 year old design?

They were basically maintenance nightmares (as the background lore goes), so the Rebels just left the plating off so they could have easier access to the ship systems for maintenance - rather than having to take it off and put it back on every time they had to fix something.

Ahhh ... now this makes sense ... !?

I like the Y-Wings 'naked' ^^

I like the aces idea. Could we get some rogue loving with repaints and some battle damage on them

Aces are shipped already
