Looking for a small fast light freighter

By bboi018, in Game Masters

Hi all,

I've been writing a campaign for a couple of months now and I've been looking for a fast small light freighter (with a deck plan). I was looking at the HWK-290 but after some research, there is a size dispute with FFG determining it was much smaller than Wookieepedia's stated size. I'm looking for one of similar size to the HWK-290 on Wookieepedia. Something smaller than 30m length (smaller than YT-1300) with a small cargo hold.

Thanks for your help.

Edit: I've checked all of wookieepedia's light freighters, but they all seem to big and bulky.

Have you looked at the YT-1760? There are several sets of deckplans out for it.

My party is also using the YT-1760 as their ship. I found most of the deckplans for the ship a little unrealistic as they devote every last bit of the tiny ship to deckspace. I figured the ship would need room for its engines and other systems, so I settled on this layout: http://www.colonialchrome.co.uk/ShipImages/Generic/GN_CEC_YT-1760_S.png Though we've agreed that there are maintenance areas not marked on the map, where an engineer can access both engines.

Of course I do think either could be valid, I just wanted a significant size tradeoff for the high speed, and oversized engines. BTW I'm using the GSA profile here for the ship's stats.

The yt-1300's deckplan also devotes alot of the interior to deckspace as well though (although it is 50% bigger).

How does it match up to the ghtroc?

How does it match up to the ghtroc?

If you're referring to how the ghtroc matches up to the HWK-290...LucasFilm said it was 16.5m...but wookieepedia says its 29m. The ghtroc is 38m.

I don't think the HWK-290 should be considered a light freighter if it doesn't even have a cargo hold.

check under the Vehicle Maps folder. There are a couple of smaller freighter maps in there that sound like what you are looking for. Exterior shots of the ships are in the Space folder.

Cheers!

p.s. The G9Rigger particularly looks like what you might need.

Agreed - I always figured the bigger ships would have room to situate those systems above and below the decks.

While not statted up in the current rules, there are a few ships that meet the size requirements and, with a little bit of love, could surely meet your speed requirements.

And yes, these all have floorplans, as they were all in Stock Ships from the d6 version of Star Wars. I've done some statting of these (i.e. lots of sticky notes and notecards in my copy of the book), so here are the notes I have on them.

1) Lantillian Short Hauler : 27 meters; I'd guess around Speed 3, Encumbrance of about 140 [85 tons]. It needs a crew of 4 with only two extra spaces for passengers, but I think you can easily turn the crew into 2 (pilot with co-pilot/gunner). It's not very agile; I'd guess somewhere in the negatives between -1 and -2, maybe even -3 if the fluff is to be believed.

2) The Z-10 Seeker : 20.3 meters; I personally put it at speed 3-4 when it lacks cargo pods, perhaps a 2 with them; Encumbrance of about 20-30 (5 tons) sans cargo pods, each of which nets another 30-40 Encumbrance at the cost of speed and/or maneuvering. Sadly, passenger capacity is 2, so you'd need a very small crew. I'd assume it is pretty agile sans cargo pods; maneuver 0, maybe a -2 with the pods attached.

3) Kazellis Light Freighter : 28 meters; I'd put it at Speed 3, Encumbrance 170 (100 tons), and room for 8. It's average on handling, so I'd leave it at a 0 maneuver. Not much to really write home about, but it's usable.

4) The Nova-Drive 3-Z Light Freighter : Measures 28 meters, and looks like a puffed out YT ship (because it technically is). Room for 8, Speed 3 (at most while stock) and Encumbrance just a bit higher than the YT-1300. Basically, take a YT-1300 an give it a few perks, like more cargo, better living quarters, and even better sensors.

5) Starfeld ZH-25 Questor : 22.4 meters with room for 6 passengers, 140 Encumbrance (85 tons), and comes stock with an x1 Hyperdrive (instead of an x2). Speed of 3, Maneuver of -2; -1 if you ditch the external cargo pods (I'd call them 10 Encumbrance each). The floorplan is pretty much all cargo room with bunks and an escape pod on one side, the cockpit in the middle and the galley/common room with another escape pod on the other side.

Sadly, with your size limit, we remove a bunch of really fun ships, like the XS-800 Light Freighter at 30.2 meters (basically a small Blockade Runner), the Crescent-class Transport at 30 meters, Suwantek's TL-1800 at 30 meters, the L19 Heavy Freighter at 50 meters (but 10 passengers, over 220 Encumbrance and no less than Speed 3, possibly a 4),

As a final note, most freighters are not going to be "fast" at Sublight speeds. Most are going to be at Speed 2-3 on average, a select few will hit Speed 4, and it is a VERY rare freighter that will hit a 5 and still have much cargo space to spare. Just saying.

Thanks for your suggestions. the G9Rigger and the Short Hauler look very nice. I was looking at the XS-800 but I found an XS-1200 with a nice deck plan. I might just use the G9Rigger or short hauler.

There's also the YT-1000, which is only 28m long.

If it's of interest, here's a link to a PDF extract on the Haynes site, which is from their most excellent Millenium Falcon manual.

Note that the XS-1200 was just a player-modified version of the XS-800; the 1200 doesn't really exist in canon (unless you want it to, of course).

I find the G9 Rigger to be in the same boat as the YT-1300 now; everyone saw it in a show/movie and they all want one just like it. Just my personal gripe ^^;

Glad to be of some help at least!

I don't fault players for wanting ships specifically highlighted in the movies or series(es). I attribute it to the ships having been depicted in action (in 3-dimensional moving action, both externally as well as shots of its interior). So there is a much more intimate familiarity with it which lends itself to the player's imaginations and ability to visualize/immerse themselves.
