I think I'm cursed!!!

Haha...just had to vent, but I was curious if anyone else felt this way.

I've never really been good at the game, even though lately I've been playing it a lot. I think my overall record is around 75-80% losses.

But lately I feel like I may as well just concede games once we flip over the first maneuvers. I don't know how many times I've had 4-5 attack dice flip up completely blank or evade dice being all focuses (unless I have the token, then they're blank)

Don't get me wrong, I love the game and losing doesn't make the game "un-fun". Sometimes, though, it does get stale when everything you do results in a negative.

I've recently been teaching my friend how to play. He's currently 5-0 with me after a variety of builds and point totals. Somehow, he can always stroll right through my killzones, then one-shot my ships from across the board. Earlier today, he rolled 4 natural crits (!) at range 3 through a asteroid with a missile, then later rolled 5 (!!!!!!) with some clusters. Meanwhile, my x-wings and b-wings never scored more than a single hit at a time, despite TL's and focuses, often @ range one.

I've got a build that gave me a decisive win at a tourney, but I haven't used it since. I've been fairly inconsistent on both ships and factions, so maybe that's why I'm not doing so well. Then again, so has my newbie friend and he wins every time!

Anyone else ever have a funk like this? What did you do to get out of it?

This might be better off in the general discussion.
At Warhammer 40k I am notorious for failing my 3+ armor saves...its like having a 5+ save consistently! It is sad...
I still manage to get wins more than 50% of the time, but it takes practice and you need to gain an advantage.

At X-wing my rolls are not that bad. But the trick to winning IMO is also to get an dice advantage. Do not go for the 1 on 1 situation but stomp 1 ship with your whole fleet. This takes a game plan and solid formation flying. You might want to watch some youtube vids on the world championships. In the semi-finals the Rebel player loses his biggs very fast to massive amount of crap rolling. Then proceeds to win due to his game plan (strategy?) pulling trough due to him keeping up rolling dice more often than his opponent.

(edit: I am not claiming you are a bad player instead of unlucky though, I feel your pain)

Change your dices. Buy a dice pack.

I had 2 interceptors at range 1 with focus throw 4 blanks each (against shuttle). The next turn one of them (who had 1 hull left) was shot at by a tie at range 3. Attacker threw one hit, I rolled all blanks for defense. Turr Phennir dead... but I still won match miraculously.

I played a game yesterday where my dice were average to hot and my opponents dice were ridiculously HOT.

I had three attacks in a row that had at least three hits at range three and his HWK and Xwing rolled nothing but pictures. This continued for three rounds. Can't beat the dice.

On a side note, that player lost in the next round handedly because he had cold dice.

As good as any player can fly, you can't beat the dice.

Can't beat dice. But you can manipulate them to your advantage as part of squad building. There is a lot of math to this game but in a single match it's unlikely to "work out" to "average".

Best advice I have for you:

buy some new dice so your mind is clear (FFG dice aren't perfect)

Spend a LOT of time building a squad you really enjoy flying.

SPEND A LOT MORE TIME playing that one squad.

Just keep strong, and ride it out. Hope your luck turns eventually, that is what I had to do. So many games, losing just in the end despite flying a very solid and good game. Such is the world of dice.

I just came out of a 5 game losing streak to take third in a store championship. I had to figure out a list that would shake things up a little bit and force me out to take a new look at the game. Something new and fun for me to fly and unexpected by my opponents. Most of all though, I took more time to plan my setup phase and initial moves based on what my opponent was doing. You can make or break a game just based on that.

This may be of no solace but I firmly believe that everyone rolls average eventually. If you are going through a string of bad luck the rolls should even out and you should have a string of good luck. Maybe when you're 80 and an X-Wing Guru you'll will roll nothing but Crits and Evades. Stick to it.

PS I really feel your pain. Sometimes I'm certain the FFG dice are wonky and not weighted properly.

Try to practice rolling dice on whatever table/surface you are using. The X-Wing dice roll/bounce differently on each surface. I've played on tables where the dice just drop straight down and don't roll. My table at home tends to make the dice roll a lot so I barely put effort into the roll.

I have pretty much figured out how to roll dice on my table and I roll fairly consistently. Some other tables I may experience difficulty with at first.

LOL, make a gift of your dice to your friend. He won't be suspicious, will he? ;)

In my play group I would say I'm better than average. I win far more than I lose generally. But for some reason, I can NOT for the life of me win against my wife. She's not as skilled at maneuvering as me, she can't even remember pilot abilities and makes poor strategic decisions constantly. But every time I play her, her dice are always on fire and mine suck. Every...time. It's actually really amusing. She's not even really into the game, but just plays with me mostly because I enjoy it (she's a sweetheart). But she always... beats me lol. 90% of the time.

Dice are fickle. But I'd say keep at it! Your luck will turn eventually and just do everything you can to improve your game and focus on what you CAN control.

I can totally sympathize with you. Last year I went through a stretch in our league where I went like 1-7 and all of those losses were winnable games where the dice went against me. I almost hit that breaking point where I just quit, but I stuck it out and when we started up our next league cycle, I decided to quit playing to win and just have fun.

It was tough to remember that every weekend, but I did 2 things that really helped. First, I played all of those crazy/silly squads that I'd wanted to try, but never would b/c they didn't look like they'd win on paper. Second, I just quit paying attention to my win/loss record over that season. I didn't check our standings, and I did my very best to put each week's game out of my mind as soon as I got home. I think that playing those odd-ball squads helped w/that part too, b/c I wasn't spending time reviewing my games each week, trying to decide what went wrong or figure out how to tweak the list. I just moved on to the next game with another squad.

One other thing that I'd suggest for you is to throw a notepad in w/your gear and actually keep a log of your games. Note each time that you feel like you've lost a game due to bad rolls, but also track each time you win b/c your dice were hot.

Most importantly, be honest about the rolls: its entirely possible that while you had some bad rolls that your opponent did as well and that he actually won due to something else you did. Rolling 4 blanks really sticks out in your mind, but that's no worse than sticking a ship on an asteroid and not getting to shoot during a critical juncture, but you tend to forget not shooting b/c you didn't roll any dice. (You literally did nothing.) Track those games under a 3rd category.

Once you've got a dozen or so games recorded and can see how things are actually playing out, I bet you'll feel a lot better about things.

Some really good advice there.

My suggestion is to put your ships in a position to where their survival isn't in the hands of the defense dice. If you're opponent can't shoot at your ships, you can't die because of blank defense dice results! I know this isn't possible 100% of the time, but it's helped me through slumps in my games. I've had hot attack dice with cold defense dice that made what looked to be a victory become a loss.

At least I can say I gave my opponent a solid fight.

That, and opening up the first round with all my ships doing K-Turns back towards the edge is TOTALLY worth the look on my opponent's face. It makes me laugh despite the number of bad dice results I may have later.

I got diced so badly last week, I almost rage-quit:

Was a social game, opponents B-Wing (with HLC) rolls 4 hits on its first attack, another 4 hits the next turn, 4 hits the turn after that until finally only scoring 3 hits on the last. I think the B-Wing alone rolled more hits than my entire squadron.

Oh, and to add insult to injury his Y-Wing never failed to hit with his Ion Turret...

Chrome has some good advice in there.

I believe that it's simply a matter of how the mind works that the "bad" rolls stick out in your mind more. At times perhaps the "good" rolls get lost amidst your feelings of your "skill" in piloting, squad building or other factor that you want to give yourself credit for. When it goes good its skill but when it goes bad the dice have betrayed you. You can sometimes lose sight of other issues and I think that's simply human nature.

I refuse to dwell on dice results. I always carry a mindset that the dice results will be good every time but when they all come up blanks I move on. The more you let bad dice bother you the more apt you are to make mental mistakes that truly cost you.

Maybe I hexed myself, but I actually had one of these games last night against mege. He was running Luke, Ibitsam, and a pair of A-Wings while I was running HSF with two Y-Wings w/Ion Cannons. After the 3rd turn of shooting I felt like my dice were rolling horribly b/c out of 4 or 5 Ion Cannon shots I'd only managed 1 hit. I had to remind myself though that all of those shots were against his A-Wings though, so I was shooting at higher agility targets than I'm normally used to.

I ended up losing, but I believe that it was more tactical on my part than dice b/c I spread my early shots around, instead of focusing fire. Both of his A-Wings used Focus tokens to avoid hits, and if I'd shot at the same target each time he wouldn't have had the focus tokens to block my 2nd/3rd attacks.

Wow, so it nice to see in not the only one.

I can't roll worth crap no matter how good I fly.

One game I had a shuttle, 3 ties, and 2 interceptors.

Shooting at an a wing, range one, and my shuttle, and tie all missed, when he attacks I lost 2 ties.

I've come close to throwing the dice threw the wall a few times.

I don't mind losing, but when you roll 4 attack dice and say use gunner for a total of 8 dice and get one hit, and then your opponent rolls 4 with target lock and almost always gets 4 hits, it enough to really drive one mad

This... right here, is why I laugh at the mathers in games with dice... those stats are all bunk in a one night game scene... the randomness of dice and the surface you throw them on kills all those stats they cling so hard to.

I liked the one thought to get a set of dice separately, could shake up your game. Sometimes dice just don't do what they are supposed to do..trust me I know.. been there done that..

I've also rolled a lot of dice and chosen the ones that roll better than others.. I have had great luck with them and they consistently roll higher (they were d10s for an RPG) it showed me that even factory made dice have a variable, and some are better than others...

my X wing dice seem to be pretty good and are consistent, I dont lose too much or too little.. lol..

how you fly your ships can impact that as well.. if you're not in enemy arcs, you survive better..
