Storage Solution

By noodles, in X-Wing

I was just wondering what some of you are doing for a storage solution. If you're like me and have multiples of each ship, you're struggling to figure out how to store all of this stuff when you're not playing, especially with wave 4 and the large ships right around the corner. I am personally using the clam containers that the ships come in; I think those work great. But what to put all of those in?

Thanks in advance.

Until recently I too was using the 'clam' packaging but due to my increasing collection I had to upgrade.

As I love to transport my stuff around alot I chose to pick up a battlefoam sword bag with the pluck foam load out.

Its great value for much you can get in there and the pocket on the front are great for storing the non-ship stuff

Been using this for a while. Probably upgrade though once wave 4 comes out.

I've got two of the Plano 1374 one for each side, I have a collection for each and still plenty of room to spare. Shuttles, firesprays & falcons fits in each and other people on this forum have measured out CR90 & GR75 Transport so they should both be able to fit up top.

Amazon link: (I bought both at 34.99 in Nov, so my guess is the price is fluid)

Happy Hunting

You beat me too it!

I kept my clam packaging and used it to store my ships in.

My rebels, now obsolete with wave 3 and so much coming out for wave 4.

pic1773299_md.jpg

My empire case. It has changed from this. The YT-1300 is out, replaced by 2 Lambda. I have 3 Tie bombers speckled throughout. Also now obsolete with Imperial Aces and Wave 4 coming out. I'm looking at ordering a new pluck foam for this case and getting their large case that comes with 2" pluck foam x 3. But that new purchase would be around $100 with shipping and I'm looking at other possible storage solutions.

As it stands right now I have 2 small Rebel cases, 1 Empire, and 1 large card box holding all of my stuff.

New purchases will be Imperial aces x 1, Transport x 1 (or 2), Tantive IV x 1, Wave 4: Z-95 x 8, E-wing x 2, Defender x 2 (3), Phantom x 2 (3). Empire ( 6-8 small ships) and Rebel ( 11 small, 2 large)

Against what I have; Empire (15 small, 4 large) and Rebel (18 small, 2 large)

To store everything: Empire (23 small, 4 large) - Rebel (29 small, 2 Large, 2-3 Huge) and huge ships for Empire at some point.

For the Empire case:

For other options I am looking into for storage:

Battle foam...nuff said....

Here is what I did. Unfortunately the cases have no brand labeling, so I can't tell you what they are,but there are lots of these at your Home Depots and such.

I use a Battefoam Sword bag now and it is better, but this worked.

With all the new stuff coming out, including huge ships, I'm hesitant to move on my permanent storage solutions yet. I just don't know how many of each type of ship I'm going to have. Originally, I figured a 100pts worth of each ship was a good benchmark. But with repaints like Porkins or the Interceptors in iImperial Aces, plus the fact we're most likely moving to larger point games with epic play, everything is in such flux I'm not going to purchase my final storage solution yet. It's ships on the shelves for now.

Really we are talking about transportation of your ships more so than storage. If it's just storage get a shoe box. Carrying around 100pts for each ship is ideal for the completist. Once repaints come intothe picture, you'll end up with ships to leave at home. I've purchased a Battle Foam bag for my storage with custom inserts. As wave 4 descends upon us I'll need to get some foam recut. This comes at a small price of around $35. The Plano boxes are a great cheap option and are highly customizable to your needs. Battle Foam is also customizable at first but once you make the decision of the lay out you're locked in without purchasing additional foam.

Now comes the type of transportation you plan on making with your fleet. If all you do is go from house to car, car to game shop. The Plano cases are what your after. The saving in cost will allow you to spend that extra cash on more ships or custom game pieces. If you do your traveling by bus, train or plane, this is where Battle Foam shines. The added protection of the foam take the bumps and drops way better than the Plano cases. The prices come in around: $70/$180 for Battle Foam and $20-$40 for Plano.

The next thing to consider are the large ships coming, Tantive IV and Transpot. Battle Foam will handle these ships with ease. The Plano cases are going to struggle to fit these monster in.

Best advice for storage (if you want to keep it cheap), go to a local home hardware store (Menards, Home Depot, Runnings), and look in the storage solution area. They tend to have many various sized storage containers with compartments, sliding drawers, etc etc. I found a really nice storage box for $8 at a menards with multiple conatiner cups that holds all my minis/cards safely and securely. I think it was meant for keeping various screws/bolts seperate/organized, but it works great for little starfighers.

Alternatively, most sporting good stores will have tackle boxes that work very well!

I get where you are all coming from. But I have the luxury that most (OK, all so far) of my games have even played at my place. If I was entering tournaments or had to travel miles to find a game, I'd agree that some solution was needed now. But so far, I can wait with my minis proudly displayed on a bookshelf in my basement. I've spent more time urgently figuring out how to organize my pilot an upgrade cards to make it easy to build squads through browsing or to make them easy to find when squads have been built prior to game night. Eventually, I do want a more permanent storage solution, but I'll be waiting until Disney pulls the Liscense or the game fades in popularity. I still want to preserve the pieces, as my so year old nephew has just steered discovering Star Wars, and domedayi'd like to introduce him to X-Wing, as he'll be my most likely heir for this game.

Thanks everyone for the great feedback. This was very helpful. I do have one question about the battlefoam though; how hard is it to carve out a piece once you've figured out a configuration that works? How many sheets of batte foam would you need for two of every ship, and five x-wings/tie figters? Are there cases to put all of the battle foam sheets?

Stanely makes those. You can also do something like this:

pic1597192_md.jpg

The Battle Foam line has cases that fit all BF foam pieces, they just get taller. They can also be zipped together so multiple bags can make up one case.

The BF foam piece is 15.5" x 12". My Empire case is 13" x 9" and it holds almost all (if you take out the bases) so 2 BF should do you for 2 of each plus 5 ties and X wings.

If you don't have all the clam shells then foam is not the way you want to go - go plastic like a Plano. You'll catch an x-wing laser or Interceptor wing and risk damage to your models.

My storage solution has to include the option of traveling with all of it as I visit friends who want to play and we never know what squad we are going to run nor how many it will be.

I use the Plato 3950. One for Rebel and one for Empire. I originally bought 2 starter boxes, so both have a full set of sticks, dice, asteroids and damage cards in addition to below. The top of each holds all the tokens for all the ships.

for the rebels the bottom holds 4 X-wings, 4 Y-Wings, 6 A-wings, 4 B-wings, Moldy,a Falcon and all the cards.

for the Empire, I have 6 Ties, 3 Advanced, 6 Intercepts, 4 Bombers, Slave 1 and all the corresponding cards.

not able to get in is the Shuttle and another Falcon and another Slave.

I have enough room to hold what I ordered for Wave 4 (4 of each) plus 2 boxes of Aces, but after that I will need another for future expansions and something for the three other large ships and the two huge ships.

If I could have figured out how to put a picture on here, I would have...

image_zps14fc5ee3.jpg

I love these. They fit all my 27 ships, and there's still room for more. The removable containers are awesome for the tokens.

What brand/model are those boxes? I might hunt for some online.

Here I have 17 ships in clamshells, 6 are in 2 core pack shells, 1 Falcon and 1 Slave. I still have room for 5 more expansion packs before I get another case and then I will split up the Empire and the Rebels ships.

IMG_20140214_160223_450_zpsncft01n4.jpg Dice, damage cards, bases, pilot cards, movement dials, and stuff just put in the cups separated Empire/Rebel.

Movement temples sandwiched between plexiglass, under two Plano 3449-22 cases for focus, evade, target locks, ect, ect. (I pulled 1 out so you could see under them)

Here is the latches that clamp them together for one handed carry.

IMG_20140221_113011_092_zpsenpytagb.jpg

Here I am carrying them locked together. I could easily handle 5 in one hand leaving the other for car keys and getting the door and such.
