Ok from my understanding your only allowed to have one unique character in play but I've watched videos of tourneys and seen more than one unique character in play, do I have it wrong are you able to play multiple unique characters ?

You may have as many unique characters in play as you can put into play. What you're probably getting confused about is that you may only have a single copy of a unique character in play. All other copies of that unique character could only become a duplicate of the unique you have in play.
