Want to get into X-Wing...

By INtheShadowplay, in X-Wing

I know there's probably a lot of posts about this, so I apologize in advance. Since Star Wars LCG is kind of doing the opposite of being a "living" card game, I need another game to get my Star Wars fix. I checked out some YouTube videos of X-Wing and it looks incredibly fun!

Beyond the core set (I assume I need 2, because FFG likes to make ya do that?), what do I need to get 2 competitive squads going?

Thanks in advance!

After the first Core Set, a second one is a nice option, not essential but definitely good.

For the Rebels:

A Falcon will allow you to make a competitive squad straight away alongside your two X-wings. Purchasing a third X-Wing via the expansion pack is also advisable to pick up the additional X-Wing pilots (you could skip the second core set in this instance).

For the Imperials:

Seven TIE fighters is a competitive list and could be accomplished by purchasing a third core set and an expansion pack, or three expansion packs. You want at least one expansion pack to get access to Howlrunner.

Alternatively you could stick with just one core pack and purchase two Firespray-31's and to make a force.

Beyond the two core sets, all you 'need' to be able to compete for the rebels is a Falcon. Han upgraded a bunch with two rookie X-WIngs is a good list. A couple of B-Wings would be really good to. A third X-wing (Wedge only comes in the expansion) would also help. A couple A-Wings and one of each of the Y-Wing and HWK would be nice, if you're willing to fork out that cash, but that comes down more so to your personal financial situation.

Again, A fire spray in addition to the four TIE fighters (you get 2 per core set) is viable if you use the right upgrades. The TIE fighter expansion will give you a fifth TIE as well as some new pilots (including Howlrunner). Bomber lists are good, but often need multiple bombers, so they can cost a lot of cash. Interceptors are great, and you get 2 in the 'Imperial Aces' expansion, so unless you really want a bunch of them, consider only buying 1 expansion. The Tie Advanced is mediocre, but comes with Vader. The Lambda is difficult to learn with, can be strong once you learn it, but it takes a while.

Keep in mind that no particular ship is mandatory, and this is only my opinion. You can buy more or less of each if you wish, depending on your personal budget.

does anyone have the link to that thread that was recently made for this exact question?

It does get asked a lot but it's a good question to be asked a lot

Thanks for the tips, guys. I really appreciate it. Are there any YouTube vids in particular that you'd recommend for beginners? Would be cool to get some in-depth knowledge on the ships, squads, different play-styles, etc.

This is a whole channel, but I found many of the vids on it useful

There was a recent article on the main website last month that presents some useful guidelines. I think it is quite informative. The only point I'd consider departing is on Interceptors. Love 'em, but maybe not as an early purchase; wait until you feel comfortable moving around, boosting and barrel rolling.

Cool, checking out all of this stuff right now. Also going to hop on Amazon in a bit and bankrupt myself. :D

There needs to be a sticky of FAQ like this. I don't blame the OP but these threads pop up constantly.

That FFG article is a great place to start.

What exactly did you mean in your comment about the LCG?

Probably that the epic delays are killing it.

Just popped over. Their prices are no better, and in some cases worse than Amazon, especially if you're a Prime member.

Miniature market has the best prices IME.

Everything is pretty much consistently 30% or more below retail. They also offer free shipping on any order over $100, which when you're starting a new collection isn't at all difficult to manage.

FFG has delays on other things too, including X-Wing swag. I don't see how the delays would kill the game. If that were the case, then X-Wing would be suffering too. They might want to release information about New stuff a little more sparingly to keep the interest of those of us who are impatient when not much news comes thru in a while. They released information on all the force packs in the new cycle really quickly and because of that there was less to talk and speculate on, etc.
