wedge and vader question

By Ihavebadluck, in X-Wing

what upgrades can you add to wedge and vader to complement their abilities while solo?

ex. soontir fel+PtL= awesome

Vader + Engine Upgrade + Daredevil - Just watch Vader fly circles around anyone

Wedge + R3-A2 with Adrenaline Rush - K-Turn behind the enemy then keep them stressed and locked down

Lots of other options

I want to see which of fel vader and wedge do better against the other 2. since fel costs 2 less should I just give him PtL and then the others are just one less or does that give fel to big an advantage? should I add a proton torp to wedge and a conc. missile to vader and give fell PtL and stealth device?

Mad Max Vader is my "invention" (or at least partly credited to me, right?)

One great thing about Wedge and Vader is that they are both pretty good without upgrades. But they do do well with a few

Vader: #1 Engine Upgrades. #2 Missiles of some kind. (If you get cluster missiles the give Vader Marksmanship)

My favorite upgrade for Wedge is Biggs.

Still new to the game. But isn't Marksmanship pretty much built for Wedge? Maybe give him r2d2 for survivability as well?

Wedge plays the math to give an offensive punch. So, ways to improve him are things that create a bigger statistical difference. Marksmanship is good, so is pairing him with Jan Ors to increase his dice advantage. Opportunist could to, but you'll need Han or Janson ( new with transport)+Vet Instincts to make the enemy use a token first. $$$

Vader + Daredevil + Engine Upgrades is one of the most maneuverable ships in the game, only being behind a B-Wing with Engine + Adv Sensors + Ptl/Daredevil, and is ahead of Fettigator. Dude's a beast, and probably why they'll never release a title giving the Advanced a Sensors Slot.

That being said, Vader is incredibly difficult to kill, but has a hard time dealing damage. He's probably the ONLY ship that will ever see any utility out of Expose (trading 1 of his actions to turn him into an X-Wing with a better action suite is pretty nice). Opportunist is objectively better, but only if your victim is in Range-1 of Carnor Jax.

My favorite upgrade for Wedge is Biggs.

I lol'd. Well, I chuckled inwardly, which counts on the internet, but this is still true.

Wedge has the most offensive ability in the game (barring Action Economy/Supports like Howlrunner). As such, you want him to be incredibly difficult to kill, as otherwise he's a primary kill target for your opponent.

Biggs' ability is best used to split fire, rather than to simply be the ship focused down first (i.e. make sure only SOME of your enemies' ships can shoot at him), but using him as a kill-target still makes Wedge last longer, which is good.

If Biggs is not an option (either due to exclusion from your list or due to untimely death), letting Wedge be a flanker forces your opponent to choose between facing your deadliest ship and the full force of your (remaining) fleet.
For this role, we have a few options:

  • Mobility upgrades (R2 Astromech, R7-D1, Engine Upgrade, Expert Handling, and/or Daredevil)
  • Tanky upgrades (R2-D2, R5 Astromech, R5-D8, R2-F2, Draw Their Fire [on an Ally], Determination, Elusiveness)

He's hard hitting enough: make him harder to hit.

Also, Marksmanship is ONLY good in the following situations:

  1. The pilot's ability is centered around having Critical Hits (flying as Maarek Steele, Kath Scarlet, Ten Nunb)
  2. You require multiple attacks in a round (attacking with Cluster Missiles, Gunner)
  3. Focus cannot be used (against Dark Curse, Carnor Jax)

Every other time, it is only marginally better than a Focus on offense, and decidedly inferior on Defense. Factor in the fact that you get Focus for free, and you're spending 3 points and your EPT for something that's a side-grade. I'd prefer a Daredevil WITHOUT an Engine Upgrade, 'cause that at least lets you do something significant!

I personally like to put stealth on Wedge and then force jousts. Pair him with another high PS or give him Swarm Tactics to insure there is at least one less thing shooting at him every round.

I think marksmanship is tailor made for luke since he ability is a pseudo defensive focus
