Rules Question

By Revanchist, in X-Wing

OK, so I was reading through some stuff and had a question: does Saboteur bypass Determination? I think so, because Determination says when dealt a Pilot Crit, and Saboteur doesn't actually deal anything.

Yes, it would bypass Determination for that reason.

No. The card is still dealt and would be negated.

Flipped is not the same as dealt.

Yes, the card is very specifically flipped, not dealt. It was dealt a while back when the damage was dealt. Now it's just being flipped. Determination and Chewie don't get to ignore the effects. This is one way Chewie can be subject to Critical Damage.

THIS is what causes confusion in the very simple X-wing rules; placing dictionary (or other game) meaning on to X-wing terminology. ANY damage taken from a damage card, wither it is flipped or not, it defined as "dealt" damage in the X-wing Core Rule book.

I LOVE the idea that Sabotage negates Determination, but the rules say otherwise. "Dealt" in the world of X-wing does not mean what it might in other games.

The rulebook defines dealing a Damage card on page 16; dealing a Damage card is what happens a ship suffers damage and has no shield tokens. Saboteur does not cause a ship to suffer damage, however (compare it to the Darth Vader crew card, for instance), and because Saboteur does not cause damage, it can't cause any player to deal a Damage card to a ship.

There are lots of complicated rules interactions in X-wing, but this isn't one of them--precisely because dealing a Damage card has a single, unambiguous definition.

Honestly, I have found the rules for this game to be amazingly simple and clearly written. There have only been 1 or 2 issues that I thought weren't resolved by simply reading what is actually written instead of making assumptions based on how things are done in other games.
