Stacking SKills at Character Creation.

By Atraangelis, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Can some one point me to the page that shows how skills stack when they are part of your career and Specialization???

I am specificaly lookigin for Melee. IF my career skill has it andmy Specialization has it, does it give me a free rank???

What your looking at is that both your Career and Specialization allow you to put a point in each when you are choosing the 4 Career skill, then the 2 bonus Skills from Specialization. It's not a free rank, it's just allowing you to choose it twice or choose it only once.

I'm not near my book at the moment, but I'll look it up when I can.

Normally you have eight career skills and four specialization career skills. Of these you pick 4 career and 2 specialization skills to gain ranks in at creation. If a skill appears in both, you can add a rank twice for a maximum of 2. If your species gives you an extra rank in something, you can still only max out at 2 ranks... Unless you're a Corellian human pilot who can have pilot 3 at character creation. So far, they are the only species able to do so.

It's actually explained in every career write up repeatedly what is available for the career, and then each specialization mentions what selections are available for it. So many pages in the CRB.

Hello,

Yes i do see that for every career and spec, but agatheron hit it on the head what i was looking for, but i was looking for the Page in the CRB that said.. IF the talent appears in both ((Car/Spec) and you chose each of those such as Melee) then get a rank per. thats the specific rule i was looking for and i cant seem to find it.

IF it is a inferred rule then so be it...

Hi all,

It is stated in the section on the Mechanic specialization on page 86.

Simon

It mentions you can't go higher than rank 2 at creation. It does not specifically state what you are looking for or say that you can't select two ranks in a starting skill if offered by career and spec either to my knowledge anywhere.

It does talk about it in the Technician career - Mechanic specialization on page 87, "The additional career skills of a Mechanic indicate his practical versatility: Brawl , Mechanics (of course , and this gives him the opportunity to have two starting ranks in the skill), Piloting (Space) , and Skulduggery ."

That is from the second paragraph under

Mechanic - Making stuff work

So basically you pick 4 of the 8 career skills to get a free rank in, although you get all the skills as career skills (so they cost less xp per rank). Then you choose 2 of the 4 specialization skills to get a free rank in (so in the example of technician/mechanic you can choose Mechanics from both lists to get a total of 2 free ranks at character creation), although just like the career skills you get all 4 specialization skills as class skills so they cost less xp to rank up in.

So to get your "free rank" you have to pick it so in your case you would pick a class that has Melee in the class skills and the specialization skills. Then you choose Melee in one or the other or both to end up with 1 free rank or one free rank or two free ranks depending on what you choose.

Hope that helps.
