Next Expansion?

By JediKnightAmoeba, in Talisman

I also thought they might do something like that. Only difference would be that 'outer' row of spaces should or could be an ocean.

Oberon,

This is an excellent idea! A nice way of giving the Revised 4th Edition land* a full and complete feel once all regions are released...

* not to say completing the Revised 4th Edition itself as there is always room for more card based expansions/POD etc ;)

Hi adjogi,

I wonder if FFG will go on with new ideas, ocean or wilderness surrounding the regions... or if they'll let it sit a year or two and move to a 5th edition.

If they move to a 5th edition, perhaps they will plan an ocean. Or we just don't know.

I'm not a great gamer, only play this game and only once a month or so, but it does seem there is lots of fan support and I think at some point or level they may take interest in legitimate, good ideas for expansions, concepts, etc.

I'm a newer Talisman player but here goes.

Also of note I will buy what ever comes out and roll with it.

1.) I want to see the Forest added.

Someone mentioned a kind of swamp-like Forest and I like this idea as well as the "cursed wood" idea with a fey theme among the bad guys. (And some more witches, please)

I'm going to guess the reason a huge fantasy themed game such as Talisman, with so many expansions...lacks a Ranger character is because they were saving it for a Forest board.

I like idea of using the dark/light fate tokens; Right now as far as I know they only come up on the Elementalist and the Hand of Doom Ending.

2.) Ocean theme.

It would be cool to see the game get even bigger, but the board really is huge as it is. Making a board that goes around the outside of the corner boards would also be a bit of an ugly fit. The corners on the short edges of the board + corner boards have a tiny gap where you really cant fit a space to move. An ocean bordering the Highlands is a bit bizarre and even more bizarre when bordering the Dungeon. So as far as a bigger, outside board to surround them all is concerned, no thanks. Though the idea of including the surrounding ocean is in fact, very cool.

3.) Time Scape.

I don't like the idea of a 2nd board not connected to the original. Or a Sci-Fi theme being blended in. (And I usually pick Sci-Fi over Fantasy for my choice of gaming.) Apologies to the vets who really liked it. Hey I liked Spelljammer back in the day!

4.) Master Set, designed for meshing all the expansions together.

Just a random guess on which I have nothing to go by, but I fear the expected Forest expansion may be the last before a 5th Edition is in the works. I really hope FFG makes one more card set, maybe a POD, that sets up a great blender experience.

Get the veteran playtesters together to design a few of the cards each, as I believe with as much experience as they've had over they years they can make good "meta" cards to address issues that have churned up over time (Too many dragon tokens meta, Maybe being able to fish that giant adventure deck) and -maybe- release it with those Mephesto characters translated, figures for them, the two promo cards, Danse Macabre Ending and regular Ending cards and a couple of pages of FAQ/Rules changes. Maybe some "boardlets" for the gaps on the sides.

This would be ultimate fan service expansion to send 4th Revised off into the legendary while players wait for a 5th Edition.

Thank you for sharing your viewpoints.

I do hope the final board is Forest, more than any other possible. Though I think something like "Wilderness" would obviously have forest, woods, cave, canyon or other spaces, which are seen in the main, Highland and perhaps other boards.

"Wilderness" could have swamp spaces too. And the Storm river must flow through it, better than other boards (which is to say, they don't flow through it).

Timescape, well, you had to been there. nearly 30 years ago, Timescape really worked for me.

In some ways, I think the City 'shops' carry on some of Timescape in the sense that Timescape had really great weapons and items you could find or buy, which helped out a lot on the regular board. To some degree I feel the City's many possible purchases or finds continue that.

I do hope that a master set could right some of the Dragon token trauma , but also resolve or finalize some ways to use dark/light fate too.

I believe that Fantasy Flight has done an excellent job of staying true to the legacy of Talisman that they enheritied. The Forest expansion was one of the four corners on my original game board, from England. (Possibly White Drawf?) The Mountain expansion is very similar to the Highlands, and the city and dungeon are the same. So yes, I would love to see the forest expansion board return. It would good to see this forest gameboard traverse in a circular pattern leading adventurers into a central clearing in the middle of the forrest. This central clearing would be very visually appealing if it is encircled in ruin stones or a stonehedge like structure. A fork in the forrest path or a raft ride to a second ending location would give this board a more unique feel. 6 Characters would also be a big plus for this expansion and add real value. Characters: Scout (n), Archer/ranger (G), Centaur (N), Witchdoctor (E), Pilgrim (G) Barbarian (N), Dark Elf (E),

You can probably rule out Witch Doctor and Barbarian. They, along with the Ninja, Martial Artist and others, are on the list of characters to be added one at a time to the Talisman Digital Edition of the game, so I doubt that they'll be in the Forest expansion.

Even if the fourth corner as just been announced I'm still hoping for a new center board expansion as alternative to the Dragon's one.For example a Vampire's Castle or Tower with some new game mechanics, bosses, etc.Of course more small expansions is always a welcome. Can't wait for Woodland though.

I would like a large wizards tower.

They said in the preview of The Dragon expansion years ago that they prototyped a central tower but players kept moving it out of the way, which is why we got the board overlay.

STILL! I think a central tower would make it look grand.

It could be a flat wizards tower, I don't care, but a 3D one would be cool!

I own the also the 3rd edition with the 3D tower, and we use it only for the endgame.

Although it looks great, it's unpractical ...

2D - like they did in the Dragon Expansion - is IMHO the better way -_-

I could imagine a "low" tower. With a slow rise to the top which would be 5 cm or so above the main board. It would make a nice effect of climbing, but wouldn't limit your view of the board.

I LOVE the 3rd edition Dragon's tower. To me it adds a feel to the game like no other. Our group played the 3rd edition Talisman at least 50 times and I can't think of anyone complaining about it getting in the way. We even have the dragon on top which is one thing that really adds to the ominous feeling of fighting your way up a tower to an dangerous endgame.

Every one of us that played the 4th edition Dragon's Tower the first time wondered why they didn't make the tower 3d.

All of us play tabletop miniature games so we are used to the 3d gaming tops and things getting in line-of-sight and maybe the explains why we are OK with it.....

I imagine it was a cost decision. I would think that including a 3D tower that would last long enough without being destroyed would have put the price up to something nearer the base game cost.

I own some Lord of the Rings board games that had 3D parts, they were rather flimsy. I keep them built all the time and stored away.

I prefer the 2D tower over a potential 3D tower. I rarely play the game at home, having to bring the game with me to play with friends. Stuff like a 3D tower wouldn't last very long. Plus, the 2D tower has the added benefit of a rear end.

Totally agree with you. A double-sided 2D board is much better than a 3D board which ultimately would get in the way and probably break over time!

So... Are there any expansions still coming (after the Woodlands expansion that is)?

Seems like they filled all the corners, and had an overlay over the middle of the board. Not much place to add new boards. There's little room in between the boards, by far not enough to place any additional boards, especially not with the old Black Industries board, which they'll hopefully keep in mind as well.

Next expansion would be a minor expansion, so there should be no problem adding that, if they got any good ideas. But then? Will they just add more minor expansions, or stop altogether, or will we see detached expansion boards, such as timescape?

I guess the game will reach a crossroad (or fork?...Forkroad? =D ) when the 4th corner arrives.

Players might either;

1) Feel that the game is complete and not need more.

2) Want more.

FFG might either;

1) Stop, and focus on other games. Since the major expansions are out there. The players got most of what they hoped for.

2) Continue to make expansions as long as we buy them. Both small and alternative corners.

3) Focus on small expansion or POD that will create better balance and gaming experience between all expansions.

This is my spontaneous thoghts on the matter. Feel free to speculate. I have no big experience on how FFG usually behaves when a game is "complete". But since they have alot of games to put their resources on, I guess they may move on. But if it's a game they make a lot of money from, I guess they might continue to service us.

Personally I feel satisfied that I will get the 4th corner. I have got everything up to City and will also get the Nether realms since I haven't got that yet. Firelands don't feel to interesting though. But it's quite possible that I will buy more if they release more. It depends on what it is. So I am a "1" right now, but hope that FFG will make a "3". That will make me buy more.

Drail, I have found the Firelands to be interesting so perhaps you should investigate more, get more feedback.

I do agree that many players will feel 'complete' now, unless FFG eventually announces some big game changer. it does seem that way.

I hope there will be more PODs or even other small expansions that will give new directions, concepts or special features; whether they integrate better, the total game or not.

Just kind of rambling here.

I really want to see a blender pod, maybe even a flat out separate "Meta deck" for the pod.

Just a fan service product for playing with everything offered up at the table with all the expansions, etc. I think the flow of the game now is actually still very good, and still stays close to the "random, but able to progress" feeling of the game.

With the 4th corner and Dark/Light fate making a big presence in that corner, pretty much all the bases are covered.

With some of the past expansions they even seemed to address some of the things that bogged down the game or caused minor complaints at the table.

Burn cards, help the Adventure deck flow. (Though.....in attempts to fish you can burn cards you were fishing for ;) )

The city made gold worthwhile.

Highlands kind of gives you a safer place to venture and steadily progress.

As far as boards go the sea/ocean would be the only other really feasible option besides some kind of "underdark" or the sky.

If wanting to mirror timescape I suppose planar travel could be visited too. I'm not really up on the lore but;

You have the neither realm, the pain of peril and wherever the Ifrit, Marid and the Djinn come from. And dragons?

Out of all of the expansions, the one tht introduced new mechanics I enjoy the most was The Blood Moon.

I like the time card, I like the Werewolf and I like Lycanthrope. (Though I don't like how difficult it is to get rid of if, though few players want to)

So maybe another template that can be applied to players. Vampire seem like the obvious choice though we do have one character with that notch already.

On kind of an afterthought, the things I see people asking about re usually the following:

1.) Updated FAQ/Rules.

2.) Timescape. Vets love this thing. To be honest with all the good reviews about it I'm kind of looking to see if someone has it around to gander at at one of the conventions i'm going to.

3.)Danse Macabre and generic Crown of Command endings printed, promotional cards, Mephisto characters. If you like this, check out Talisman Digital Edition as it will eventually have all of this.

4.) Ocean or sea Expansion, boardlets for the long edge of the table.

I dunno.

As I said earlier I'm voting for more alternative center boards with different themes and of course more small expansions or pod. It's true though that Talisman will feel complete once Woodland will come out in a way that all the classic expansions and almost all the classic characters have been remade.

Timescape should be a stand alone game with it's own feel of adventure(exploring planets with diverse landscape, smuggling, bounty hunting, space battle, space travel, time travel, etc.).As cool as Warhammer 40k setting is, I never felt Relic as a real adventure game.So Timescape is a welcome but as a original FFG game rather than a Talisman expansion. That's only my opinion.

Perhaps this has been suggested before, but perhaps expansions to the expansions. Instead of adding new stuff they can just work with what they have. As Dungeon and Highlands have been with us for quite a while now I would welcome additional cards to both of the decks. Perhaps NPC's such as the reaper and werewolf that are only present in their respective regions could be added.

I can see both good and bad things with this. That you'll have to own both base game and an expansion to use it obviously slims down the group of potential buyers a lot. On the other hand, those who have the complete game might like this better. I rarely have time play the full game and we always pick some of the expansions to use so I would love this development of the game.

I'm firmly entrenched in the use every expansion group; so I would buy probably any further expansion.

I think you, me and others have suggested expansions to expansions. To some degree the POD system would be the most economical way of doing it, but the drawbacks might be no plastic figures or parts (So a Master Vampire Expansion of Blood Moon would have plenty of new cards, perhaps, but the titular Master Vamp would be a card, which could be stood IN your own card-holder, I suppose).

I like the idea of expansion -> expansion resolving or clarifying certain rules or usages.

And perhaps an expansion - POD or not - that would just introduce new characters or revived characters from previous editions that have not been used yet. This set could also have new alt endings.

And maybe some day, someone will give us 'boardlets' to fill in the space between corner boards.

On that, I favor an ocean and a desert boardlet, seems those are almost the last envrionment types left to explore.
