I was wondering what you people think is the best special ability of any pilot in the game. obviously performing 2 actions is awesome but so is reducing enemy agility by 1 or being able to do actions while stressed, so I wanted to see what you guys think is the best ability.
best special ability?
straight out - Darth Vader #1, Han Sole #2, Wedge #3
For the Points #1 Night Beast.

straight out #4- Soontir Fel, #5-Howlrunner.
for the cost, I definitely agree that Night Beast is a hidden gem that rarely gets the play he deserves.
Han probably has the best all-around card, but that is why he costs more than any other ship. He and Wedge are designed to always hit, and Vader and Soontir are up there. The TIE advanced is Vader's only setback... potentially one of the best pilot abilities on potentially one of the worst ships. Tycho and Jan Ors share a similar fate.
Agree with all the names posted here already. Turr has a lot of potential, I like Biggs in the right list, Luke is a bit underrated, as is backstabber and I'm personally pumped for Carnor Jax.

As if opportunist wasn't enough, right? The Aces should be fun!

#2 onwards depend highly on what you prefer. Supportive effects wise, Howlrunner is probably the best, and maybe Dutch or Jan Ors. Solo effect wise, offensive is definitely Wedge and/or Backstabber, defensive is definitely Dark Curse and Turr, maybe Luke
Best, as in has the most visible effect:
Kyle, Jan, and Biggs
#1 for me is definitely Howlrunner, hands down.
Luke. Free defensive focus against all attacks. Vader's awesome too.
I love Luke, Dutch and Kyle. For Imperial it's Vader, Howlrunner and Jonus.
I love me missiles there for i love Jonus
Dark curse for personal abilities.
Edited by PS10Tycho w/ PtL, because he just doesn't care!
Ten Numb with an autoblaster.
Luke. Free defensive focus against all attacks. Vader's awesome too.
I'm surprised I don't see Luke on more tournament lists. He's **** near impossible to kill at times, and because he doesn't need focus on defense, he can take the Marksmanship EPT.

Add Marksmanship and Adv. Sensors and you've got one bad mother...
My list would be
Rebel:
Biggs
Wedge
Jan
Imperial
Vader
Howl
Jonus
The rebel list is a bit more up in the air imo, since none of their abilities seem 'wow' without help for synergy aside from maybe Biggs. I think the Imp list is pretty obvious Vader is exceptionally powerful by himself and the other two are huge force multipliers.
Its Wedge and he is in the perfect ship for his ability.

I think it COULD be that due to the timed nature of tournaments, kill ability trumps survivability. The A-Wing suffers from this as well.
To have the best chance of winning the overall tournament you need the ability to take out as many points as possible in under an hour. Endurance tactics just don't work as well in that format. And though Luke is still great, any points spend on his endurance could have been spent on more firepower.
I think it's one of the (several) reasons Tie Swarm lists are so enduring. When you win, you can typically end things quite quickly.
I think my list is Vader, Han, DC, Wedge, and Turr in terms of being awesome abilities right out of the box (no upgrades required).

So, I just played a game that convinced me my next tourney list will have Luke in it. Was up against 6 Imperial ships:
Vader+Engine+Determination
Alpha
Academy x4
I flew:
Luke+Stealth+Marksmanship
Garven+Stealth+R2
Tycho+Concussion+PtL+Stealth
I only lost Garven VERY late in the game (and I believe it was due to a bad die roll in the beginning that cost him his stealth upgrade.) Luke and Tycho were fired on many times, but were never hit. Clean win, all 6 opposing ships were destroyed.
So to go back to the OP's original question: Luke's is pretty awesome.
