My Millennium Falcon Repaint

By WizzBif, in X-Wing

Over the weekend, I finished up a repaint that I've been doing on my Millennium Falcon. I repainted it as... <drum roll>... The Millennium Falcon. :) The Falcon was the miniature that finally pushed me over the edge and in to playing this X-Wing game. It's just an awesome model. Kudos upon kudos to FFG for the detail that they put in to this sculpt. The more I've been playing with the Falcon in my lists, the stronger my desire grew to repaint it. I wanted to keep it as the Falcon, but I wanted it to look dirty and gritty like the we see in the film, worthy of Leia remarking, "You came in that thing? You're braver than I thought." I'm pleased with how it turned out.

well said sir

How'd you get the rust effects? They're very nice.

I'll admit that at first I didn't even know it was a repaint... but then......

nice work!

Seeing the rust and various pamels picked out, it's a really nice job, and as mentioned... subtle. ?

Excellent work, as always. Keep it up!

Thanks. For this repaint I did not spray-prime the entire model. The factory paint job was suitable as a base coat for what I wanted to do. That said, I actually did paint just about every panel on the entire ship. I first applied a black wash to any areas that I thought the factory black wash did not get well enough into the crevices. Then I pulled up the highlights on the panels and other areas of the ship using a off-white, linen white making sure to keep my brush strokes from the center out to the edge of the ship. I also added highlight to the gray panels and repainted the red panels to make them a bit brighter. The exposed mechanical areas were painted with a silver metallic and washed to tone them down a little. With the Falcon restored to a more pristine condition, it was then time to dirty and rust it up. To create the rust, I used watered down Troll Slayer Orange from Citadel and painted it into various crevices and around the tiny raised panels. Following the areas that I added the orange, I went back and painted translucent browns over the orange using Army Painter soft and strong tone inks. Painting with inks in this way is very subtle and sometimes needs 3 or 4 applications.

Nice job. I was adding stains and rust to my YTs just yesterday.
