Recon Specialist upgrade

By krohnt, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Recon specialist allows you to perform a focus action and then get an additional focus token, what's the point of getting the additional focus token if you can only use one focus action during a round.

FAQ page 2:

Can a ship have more than one focus or evade tokens?

Yes. A ship cannot perform the focus or evade actions more than once during a round, but a game effect (such as Garven Dreis' pilot ability) may assign additional tokens to a ship.

Is Recon specialist considered a game effect?

Help me Obi Wan!

So, a quick search through the rules section here will yield multiple questions regarding actions/tokens.

Actions are what you do after you move, take a target lock, take a focus token, take an evade token, preform a barrel roll.

This means that if you have push the limit, or someone hands you a free action (Lando or Squad Leader) you cannot do the same action again. So if you took a focus token for your action, you could not take a second focus token.

However, certain abilities grant you another token instead of another action. For example, Dutch allows you to acquire a target lock (not preform a TL action), and Garven/Kyle pass focus tokens. Likewise recon spec gives you an additional focus token when you preform a focus action, so you get 2 focus tokens each time you preform the action (which you can still only do once per round).

You are mistaken.

You can do a single action in your round. Let's say, a Focus action.

But you can SPEND infinite TOKENS in a round. Spending a token is not an action. You can spend a token whenever you are entitled to do so, provided you have one.

So the point of getting 2 focus TOKENS with 'Recon specialist' is that you can use them to modify 2 different dice rolls in the same round.

For example, You can use one token in your attack roll, and the other token for a defense roll when attacked. Or if you attack with 'Cluster missiles' use one focus token on each missile volley. Or keep them to use them in 2 different defense rolls, if you are under heavy fire. Or if you also have equipped 'Deadeye', spend one focus token in order to be able to fire your ordnance, and the other to modify its following attack roll...

In other words: The 'action' is what gives you the token... But you can spend any number of tokens per round, if you happen to get them by other means.

Just to blow your mind a bit: If you happened to have 2 Recon Specialists on a single ship (YT-1300 or Shuttle), you'd actually get a bonus token from each of them, for a total of 3.

This doesn't have any actual utility yet, but it is technically possible.

Thank you Jehan, you explained it well. I think the FAQ wording is what confused me the most.

Well it has SOME utility. You can spend a focus token potentially on each defense roll, as well as on your attack. If you have gunner you could spend a focus on your attack, if you missed you could spend a focus on the gunner attack, and then you'd still have a token sitting on you for a defense roll. :D

Which would require the YT to have THREE crew slots, which it doesn't. :D

But as Crooked Wookiee pointed out, you could still use a focus token per defense roll, so you could use all three just on defending potentially.

YT with two recon specialists can spend three focus tokens on a cluster missile/deadeye attack. Or it may spend all three tokens against three different attacks.

You get 1 focus token for doing the action, +1 per Recon Specialist, which = 3.

There seems to be a slight misunderstanding: CrookedWookie suggested to add a gunner. DailyRich pointed out correctly that two recon specialists and one gunner require three crew slots.

How many seats does your YT have? ^_^

How many seats does your YT have? ^_^

Well there's 4 seats in the cockpit, and room for what another 6 or so in the rear... So it could have what 8+ crew. :)

Right? So I had another RecSpec stow away on my ship. Who are you people to judge?
