Thoughts on "Dark Troopers".

By Arthur Volts, in X-Wing

Mingle some grey matter here so I can get around to splicing some armoured troopers to a stand.

-360 Degree firing arc

-Ships overlapping them don't lose their action.

-No red Maneuvers on the dial.

-Primary weapon range is 1-2

-Maybe they can be dropped out the back of larger ships like mines and bombs.

The big problem is going to be that their weapons couldn't hurt a ship. Even powerful small arms don't do much of anything to ships in Star Wars.

But since they have the equivalent of power armor, maybe we can treat them as having the weaponry of a Space Trooper? That means they have a mini-proton torpedo launcher and can do boarding actions.

So I'm thinking:

-360 Degree firing arc

-Ships overlapping them don't lose their action

-Can move 1 in any direction

-Primary weapon range is 1 (range 2 is getting into ship weapon ranges, not man-portable)

-WP 1

-Comes with one 2 power Proton Torpedo range 1-2. Single use.

And some sort of "grappling" rules for boarding. Not sure what.

I like the deploy like mines idea.

I was under the impression that Dark Troopers had a space variant or maybe I'm simply thinking of the space trooper.

I was thinking of designing a Covert OPs shuttle. Lambda or a different ship where the upgrades on the ship are placed facedown and flipped over when used. Obviously passive effects are face up from the start of the game.

It would be interesting to play against, not knowing if they were going to poop out Mines or Troopers, amongst all its other toys.

I think you should first focus on lesser space envirmental troopers. There at least 4 diffrent Space Troopers and I think maybe the Alliance Marines are trained to fight in space.

Mk 2s 3s and alot of the offshot Dark Troopers have enough fire power to kill vehicles. The Plasma Repeter itself was a vehicle mounted weapon, or based on one.

Well, with the Dark Trooper being what they are, I don't think their dial should have a lot of movement. 1 forward, 1 bank, 1 turn, MAYBE 2 forward (red). They aren't starfighters, and they shouldn't be treated as such.

There is actual space trooper armor for the empire. The even have an assault shuttle to carry them.

They are large and bulky. They have mini proton torpedoes and laser cannons.

Think 40k terminator, only bulkier

They would be more like floating turrets. I would make them a counter lime a bomb that gets dropped by their shuttle. They just float there shooting at anything in range.

Personally I don't see a need for banking, red maneuvers, etc. They aren't star fighters with tons of speed and momentum. I think they would move more like a king in chess.

I'm also thinking they could be represented as a token rather than a full on ship base.

Oh, one way to work around many of the problems (and more realistic besides) is for a single token to represent several troopers.

Mk 2s 3s and a lot of the offshot Dark Troopers have enough fire power to kill vehicles. The Plasma Repeter itself was a vehicle mounted weapon, or based on one.

It was based off a vehicle mounted weapon but it wasn't an anti-vehicle weapon, it was an anti-infantry weapon. So were the dumbfire missiles. There's a BIG difference between a vehicle grade anti-infantry weapon and a full on anti-vehicle weapon, and none of the various DT weaponry qualifies as the latter.

I can't find a refrence that the weapons are strickly anti-infantry weapons. Even then their is the alternate version with two twin blaster cannons and 8 PLX launchers.

Definitely go with tokens. Proximity Mine-sized token for a squad, as a Crew Upgrade. Dropped as an action. Whenever an enemy maneuver overlaps, roll 1 attack die against that ship. Remains in play. May be targeted by enemy attacks, as if it was a ship. 1 Hull, 3 Agility. ~4 points.

I like the idea of them as a mine that stays in play but can be targeted.

From the thread about a ground forces game, there was an idea for infantry to be on octagonal bases and able to move 1 in any of 8 directions each turn. That might be appropriate for Dark Troopers as well.

Awww... and I was thinking of the Force Sensitive StormTrooper ones.
