9littlebees Unofficial Bestiary

By 9littlebees, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Doesn't appear anyone has done this yet, and I'm about to start a campaign based on Exploring beyond the Outer Rim, so I need of lots of beasties for my party to encounter.

So my plan is to create a big list of creatures with stats, both lethal and non-lethal. I'd love to make this a collaborative project, so will be using Google Docs and will share with those that can contribute.

As this will be unofficial, I will not be including the beasts that are found in the "official" books. Instead, I plan on converting many of those that are found in the supplements from the older systems ("Threats of the Galaxy", "Creatures of the Galaxy", "Alien Encounters", etc.) as well as adding conversions that other community members have done on here, d20 Radio, the GSA, Google+, etc (with permission, of course).

Plan of attack is:

  • Come up with initial list of beasts to include - I am aiming for 100 in total, since I like rolling on d100 lists, but will probably start with a more manageable number.
  • Approach artists for permission to use their images in this.
  • Stat everything up (including pelt / trophy stats - encumberance, selling price).
  • Make it look nice and roll it up into a PDF.

Let me know if there are any specific requests!

EDIT: Spreadsheet is now live on Google Docs. Free to view to anyone with the link, if you want to edit it, please PM me with your email address, and I'll add you to the list with edit rights.

I've already got quite a handful - nearly twenty - written up. I'm probably going to convert them into some sort of reasonable format and put them up on my blog soon. You'll be more than welcome to use them.

I think this is a great idea. Some pick up an play beasties would be helpful to any GM.

I have a decent Womp Rat build if you want it. If you use Oggdudes character creator and GM toolkit, I can send you an export.

Excellent, thanks!

I do use Oggdudes CharCreator. Thanks. :)

Due to copyright issues, I will not be including any official FFG creatures in this bestiary. First post edited to specify this.

Not sure how to write it up, so I will give you an idea to work with and how I think our GM ran this...

Swamp Flies...

Everyone in the party suffered 1 Environmental setback due to the flies being annoying while being bothered by these flies. They were only an issue during the day. (Talents that removed Environmental setbacks worked against these)

At the beginning of the turn the GM rolled a force die. For each black pip that came up he rolled to see what party member was effected (random)

He has copies of our characters and would make a PP Resilience check. We surmise that he didn't worry about failures or successes, but was looking for threats and advantages. Threats equaled strain. Two advantages or more allowed the player to ignore the environmental setback for the turn.

Some people might not like that the GM made the roll. We liked it since it didn't take our roll for the turn. These flies were more of a narrative device then anything and were a lot of fun.

Swamp Flies... Yet again

He did the same thing for another encounter, but changed the difficulty to RP. On a Despair the player came down with the Space Flu. This was fun as well. Seeing one of our kick butt combat monkeys hampered by the Flu.

Our GM loves Environmental setbacks. It adds to the feel of the scene and makes spending XP on removing those worth the expenditure. This is the best I can do from the players side of the table, so take the 'rules' with a grain of salt.

9littlebees - I sent you a PM.

Sounds like an absolutely awesome idea. I've written up some Rodia creatures. I will PM you with the details/statlines.

If you need any help with the 'making it pretty' step, I'd be happy to lend some InDesign skills.

Cool, thanks, I'll add this to the list.

Great, thanks. Looking forward to the creatures. I also own InDesign, but is it the best tool to use for a book? I've only ever used it for one page documents (character sheets, NPC sheets, etc).

I have a Star Wars creatures book, I'll jot down a note to see if there's anything in there you haven't already added. It's not really big on stats, just nice pictures.

InDesign allows you to set up Books and Master-format pages, so everything is in a matching format. Can export as PDF e-books, or even set it up to be printed as a booklet and so on. Its probably a good idea for formatting everything, but there are always other options.

Pictures and flavour are perfect. There are so many species out there, that I may be able to pick and choose the best ones to put in this supplement. Stats can be added as required.

OK, that sounds good. I've only taught myself to use InDesign, so I'm aware there's a lot of features I don't know about. Sounds like the best program to use.

I'm willing to pitch in and help with conversions, if need be.

Mostly active on G+, Forums tend to get clattered :)

OK, but just make sure you're following this post (green button at the top), and you'll get an email alert when a new post is made.

If you want to help convert some of the beasts, PM your email and I will give you editor's rights to the Google Doc spreadsheet.

I'd like to try and drum up a bit more interest in this bestiary. So far, I've decided on 27 creatures to feature in the bestiary.

In addition, a Finnish artist called Rinter (link to his Deviant Art profile) has kindly started creating high-resolution sketches of these creatures to use in the bestiary.

If you have some free time, please take a look at the bestiary spreadsheet and help by contributing to the remaining stats for these creatures.

Here are the 20 images he has produced so far, along with a list of the creatures he is still working on:

I like the art pieces. well done.

Very nice artwork!

How about including the Drexl? Not sure what people think of these stats, but it's something I worked up while running the AoR Beginner Game.

Drexl

Brawn 6, Agility 2, Intellect 1, Cunning 3, Willpower 3, Presence 1

Soak 8, WT 30, ST 30

Skills: Athletics 4, Coordination 2, Brawl 4, Survival 4

Talents: Adversary 2, Enduring 2 (+2 Soak)

Abilities: flying, Silhouette 3

Equipment: Piercing bite (Brawl, Damage 7, Critical 2, Range [Engaged], Pierce 3).

Here is a pretty sweet resource not as detailed as yours but pretty awesome.

http://swrpg.viluppo.net/adversaries/creatures/

Thanks Robert, but that resource is only of the published creatures. This community bestiary is seeking to add additional creatures, so that GM's can choose from quite an exotic list. Key to this is having illustrations of each creature, so that GM's can show their players what they are up against, something the official bestiary doesn't always do.

I like it! I've added it to the list of creatures I've requested Rinter to sketch, and added an entry to the Bestiary spreadsheet. Thanks! :)

That is really cool. Sorry I had no idea. :-( Thank you for putting together this list.

After your brilliant cards i'll gladly follow that project :)
