Tips for placing proton bombs?

By AlexW, in X-Wing

Just curious after seeing a couple bomber threads and didn't want to hijack them, but what are some good tips for placing bombs?

My favorite tactic is to force a situation where the enemy and I run into each other head-on or very close to it. From that position, many ships will find themselves having a hard time escaping your bomb drop in the following round. If you can do this close to the edge of the play area, even better.

Further to this, if you want to be a prick and are going up against high cost ships, have 1-2 TIE fighters hard turn and then barrel roll so that they end up in about the same place as where they started. It is likely that the enemy will crash into them and you can block their movement and keep them in the impact zone whilst you hurt some of your less significant ships.

If you do this there isn't any maneuver where they don't fall into the blast zone. The only way for them to escape is to boost or Barrel roll. Using the edges/corners are the best, because it limits there options. if you can lead them into an astroid field again you can limit there options for escape.

The Shuttle works great with the bombers for this. The Bombers 1 straight can help you slow play your shuttle up the board. The Shuttle with it's hard stop can make a great blocker when people are trying to escape you bombs. You have to learn your distances to make this work.

Also, if you have room for extra crew, the 'Intelligence agent' upgrade can provide you valuable information about when or when not to drop.

Primarily, build your fleet so you can find un-planned spots easily. This involves Intelligence Agents and/or high PS Bombers/Firesprays, so you know where they'll be when they land.

Another great thing to do is to stress and/or ionize your victims. This will become significantly easier when Wave 4's Flechettes and Ion Pulses hit (stressing and ionizing, respectively, and can be loaded directly onto your Protoning Bombers, on the cheap).
