HWK Swarm

By AtomicFryingPan, in X-Wing

Ok so I've been thinking of some fun and unique builds and i think the next one I want to run is 4 Hwk-290's.

Kyle Katarn-Blaster turret, Recon, Moldy Crow

x3 Rebel Operatives, Blaster Turret, Recon.

Going to try andavoid combat as long as possibe to bank focus on kyle and hopefuly be able to maintain range 2 to take pot shots wit the turret. Definitely going to avoid geting action denied at all costs as well. Any thoughts? I know this list will be ridiculous and not super competitive but it should be fun. Any other pure hwk lists you can think of? I wonder if they will ever make a modification that will give +1 to primary attack either permanently or temporary ala stealth device. Maybe call it Twin-Linked.

Sadly Dark Curse kinda ruins a swarm of blaster turrets having any chance at being competitive. But if know you won't face Dark Curse/get your opponent to agree not to it could be fun.

If you and I aren't friends, we should be.

YT-1300 ORS with Anti Puruit Lasers, Intelligence Agent and Navigator

HWK-290 RO with Recon Specialist and Blaster Turret

HWK-290 RO with Recon Specialist and Blaster Turret

HWK-290 RO with Ion Cannon Turret

YT-1300 plays movement denial.

HWK's and YT focus fire on a target.

Ion Cannon hits the guy that you need to keep out of the fight (or set someone up to crash into your YT next turn).

And as an added bonus, you move before most people even with your HWK's so you can try to run them into the enemy as well if you'd like for even more chaos as your turrets will ensure that you can still shoot at something usually.

Not so. They just couldn't use their blaster turret. R1 they are rolling 2 dice with the primary weapon. =)

The odds of you getting even one HWK into range one against Dark Curse without him barrel rolling out of your arc, or grabbing an evade if that isn't possible, is so infinitely slim that I'd argue that your opponent was throwing the game on purpose.

That ORS and 3 hwk build looks hilarious and incredibly fun

You can place 5 HWKs with blaster turrets for 100 even. If 2 are left, I'll corner him eventually. ;)

Which if you get really lucky might do some damage, but it would be pretty rare, and Dark Curse shouldn't find it to hard to avoid R1.

The hardest part of running a hwk swarm is convincing my self to buy more hwk's lmao!

I'm going to use y-wings as proxies for hwks. No way I want to buy more HWKs.

I love my HWKs. We played a 125pt list and I was using Kyle/RecSpec/Blaster/Crow and Jan/Blaster/Nien along with 2 Bs that just chewed up everything that was thrown at them.

I keep saying people underestimate these things.

Try that dogfight though- Dark Curse can stay behind the Hwks pretty easily, he k-turns on the first pass, and probably controls range 1, especially with barrel roll.... Unless you catch the R1 shot, or the lucky 1 attack v 3 or 4 defense on the approach, dark curse eats a hwk (singular, haven't tried multiple) - swapping out one blaster for an ion turret, or adding jan to your list will help you deal with DC - having jan and another ship with Ion will just about guarantee you can ion dark curse - and then he's not a problem anymore.

And I hope they continue to! I've never lost a game where I have fielded a HWK. I've also never played against one. I hope that trend continues. =)

I sincerely hope everyone notices how sarcastic I'm being with my 5 HWK swarm. All joking aside, the HWK is amazing and I would field more than 1 of them in games of 150 pts or more. I also tend to put Ion cannons on them. No focus needed, does damage, and sets up an easy kill next round.

Here is a 100 pt Double HWK squad I will field (and win with) on Friday to prove a point:

Jan+Swarm Tactics+Ion Turret

Roark+Ion Turret

Blue+Adv. Sensors

Green (or drop the Adv. Sensors and run two naked Blues)

With this build, I'm shooing first across the board, getting dice re-rolls, and screwing up flight patterns with twin Ions. This is going to be fun. =)

It's not as bad as one intially thinks...

If you have two ships against DC, one to action deny, the other to shoot, your R1 shot has a 47% to connect (if you have a focus). If you aren't at R1, you still have a 18.3% to connect. Assuming that even at R1, you're only going to do 1 damage (yes, you could to 2)... that means that after 3 turns, you still have a 1/8 chance of him being dead!

This might be quite a fun little list :-)

32 points
Kyle Katarn

Great list. I think I'd want to give one of the HWKs an Ion cannon though.

Here is my problem. I think of a swarm being 5 or more ships.

So let's say you run

6-Rebel Ops (96)

It's terrible 1 attack with 5 hps! So change it too

1- rebel op (16)

1- Rorak. (19)

1- Kyle. (21)

1- Jan (25)

That's (81) and 19 for upgrades. So use one HLC, two Ion, one auto blaster (18) but you still have a terrible list and it's not a swarm. I just think this is a bad idea.

If your talking two Hwk-290 and something else it's not a swarm list.

I mean you could rock out 3 z95 (ion pulse missile) and 3 Hwk with ions, should get you a better list but in the End I think the Hwk is a bad ship.

Hwk's cant take HLC, Ion cannon, or auto blaster. But dear god imagine if they could!

If you're firing your primary weapon in a HWK-290, then you don't understand the ship.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad this ship is not very popular. When I play with it, it always gets ignored and I win. But for those of you who have an open mind and would like to figure out why some of us love this ugly brown thing... Try this:

Jan+Ion Turret

Han+Marksmanship

Rookie X-wing

The idea is to kill one ship every round. It's a game of chicken. Can they kill you before you kill them. I've only lost one game with this build, and it was because the other player had seen it before and went after the HWK first.

You can't use Focus at all on a shot against DC. Still. If you could block his action, and if you had that range 1 shot, 2 on 3 can Conceivably get through…but then you have to do it 2 more times (at least) to kill him
