X-Wing, the weak part of my Store Champ performance

By Endgame124, in X-Wing

It seems, the X-Wing is solid as long as its only receiving 2 attack dice worth of fire. As soon as you start ratcheting up the incoming fire to 3 dice+, the X-Wing seems fairly frail and ends up being the weak part of a list. I'll use my store championship from last weekend as an example - we had 28 players and I ran the following list:

Garvin

Rookie

Green Squadron, PtL, Concussion Missile

Green Squadron, PtL, Homing Missile

I went 2-2. Round 1 and Round 2 I managed full victories, 1 vs a double interceptor, double advanced list, and 1 vs a 7 ship imperial swarm. In both games, the A-Wings really pulled the weight - The two A-Wings accounted for most of both advanceds and an interceptor in the first game, and 6 tie fighters in the second match. Both X-Wings died vs the swarm, but just had their shields stripped in round 1.

Round 3 I came up against BIggs / Dagger + Advanded Sensors / Dagger + Advanded Sensors / Rookie and I played like a chump early. Again, both X-Wings went down to a trivial amount of fire - the Rookie dropped to a Pair of B-Wing shots, and Gavin didn't do much better. With just the A-Wings, 2 vs 4, I managed to kill his Rookie and Biggs, but couldn't manage the 2 B-Wings. Round 4, with the winner going to the finals, was vs a Han and Chewie double falcon list. Must like the previous game, the A-Wings started off strong dealing excellent damage to Chewie, and the rookie dropping dead to the first volley from Han and Chewie. I managed to finish off chewie at the cost of Garivn, and it was Han vs both A-Wings. I knocked out Hans shields and did, I believe, 3 points of damage, but misplayed toward the end and ended up with Han behind my last a-Wing and I couldn't gracefully recover from it.

Anyone else experience X-Wings being a general poor choice vs rebels? If so,are B-Wings your go-to replacement, or is it better just to bump up to the much more durable falcon?

Well I have run a 4 Red X before and went 2n2. One loss was a blow out, the other went to time and I was down to one very damaged. They can be solid little fighters. Bs are nice, but if you run into Wedge like I have recent (alot more people locally using him again) Bs are dead in the water. I personally like Bs and they can be just facemelters with HLCs.

X-wings are a very balanced ship. You get what you pay for with them. I personally don't understand these low level PS lists going around that are all the rage right now. As a Rebel player, often higher PS and an ability is better than cramming one more ship and an upgrade in.

I'm a fan of Garvin, but I don't understand his use in this build. Biggs may have been a better choice. Also, did you find yourself using PtL often with the A-wings? I'm a huge fan of Deadeye on the Green to make it much easier to fire their missiles. With the points you've saved, upgrade your second X-wing to a Red and get some Astromechs.

Just my 2 cents. :D

PtL was used every turn after the first. Early game its PtL for Target Lock and Focus to drop a missile, or PtL for Boost and Target lock, followed by a focus transfer from Garvin for the missile. Over the course of the event, the Target Lock + Focus missiles accounted for 6 damage to Tie Advanceds, 2 one shotted academy pilots, 1 Biggs, and 7 damage on Chewie. Then mid game, PtL was typically used for Focus and Target Lock, or boost and focus, or boost and target lock depending on table position. This provides reliable, solid damage output until the A-Wings take some damage. At that point / at the end of the game, I switched into full defensive mode with the A-Wings with Focus and Evade.

Garvin, while he is alive anyway, generally is supposed to pass the focus to the Rookie that already has a target lock, but I found much more often I was giving it to an a-wing as the rookie just got pasted right away. Evade + Targetlock + focus is kind of fun when it boils down to it, but the plan really was to have that rookie with TL and Focus most of the game.

Statistically, X-Wings are pretty much the same as B-Wings defensively; the problem is that you have to rely on Agility dice rather than having the guaranteed Hull/Shields, and you have fewer upgrade options. I think that the problem with that squad is that the Xs will take concentrated fire just because they're the biggest threat on the board, and once they're gone, you don't have enough punch to bring ships down. XXBB OR XXXX might work better.

I find a Green with PTL to be far more survivable than a Rookie, or even a Red. You can Focus + Evade, or move behind an asteroid with a Boost, or clear an arc altogether. The Nimbleness of the A-wing is its lifeblood, and PtL just beefs that up even more!

To this point, if your A-wings keep moving out of position to be shot (or are sitting there with a Focus+Evade), and your X-wing cant, your X-wing is going to eat a ton of damage.

It wasn't a matter of enough punch, really. The A-Wings did almost all of the killing because the X-Wings just died so quickly. When 2, 3 dice shots knocks out an X-Wing, thats NO punch instead of a 2 dice punch. Had I brought, say, 3 Greens w/ PtL and Concussion Missiles and 1 Ptl Green, I probably would have done much better against the 3rd round list, as my A-Wings took a pretty good stab at it. I lack a bit of confidence in the quad A-Wing against double falcon or triple bounty hunter, but, honestly, its no worse than losing the X-Wings right away and trying to win that game with 2 A-Wings.
