New GM question

By Jables3000, in Game Masters

Hi Everybody,

I'm going to be running a game in a couple of weeks, and the players have asked if I will generate the PC's for them. (I'm the only one with a rough idea of the rules) I'm going to have 4 or 5 players running the adventure in the back of the book, is there any career/s that are must haves in a group?

Thanks in advance.

Might be more fun for them if you let them pick the type of characters (Species/Career/Specialization) and you just make the stats.

In general, the bare minimum you want are a pilot/driver, some sort of tech, some sort of face, some sort of combatant.

FFG has a handful of pre-generated characters available for download here . I don't know how useful they will be for your purposes, though.

In our group, we're all combat monkeys with one of us being a combat-monkey/technician (Gadgeteer), and another being a combat-monkey/face (Scoundrel).

This type of group lends itself toward a certain type of game, and if it weren't for us consistently still having fun, I wouldn't be sure that it's the *right* way to run EotE.

No, no "must have" careers. You shouldn't double up just to keep everyone different, but it's not D&D, you won't be punished for not having the "correct" combination of classes.

What kind of adventure do you have planned?

My reasoning is that will give you some ideas for the characters, maybe you should ask what they fancy playing for example a wookie or a pilot remembering no jedi although they can be force sensitive I guess you might want to ask what their favourite science fiction movie is maybe even their favourite character and if they say David from Prometheus... congratulate them with a droid character that can pass for human... until someone either talks to them or they get injured... ;)

Make them all Doctors.

or all Scholars... then run Big Bang Theory: Star Wars Edition

or all Scholars... then run Big Bang Theory: Star Wars Edition

Complete with laugh tracks after every line.

I'd be far too trollish to generate my player's characters. Make them all Astromechs.

In all seriousness, a fair spread is like they've said above. Atleast one guy who can hold his own in a fight. Someone to patch him up. Someone who can talk, and someone who can fix things. The specifics aren't so important. Just pick a fun grouping.

Whenever I'm stuck doing that, I approach it in one or more of the following ways:

1) Make one from each Career and let the players duke it out over what they want. Essentially, one Hired Gun, one Colonist, one Smuggler, one Bounty Hunter, one Explorer and one Technician.

2) Make two from each general career for each and let the party choose. Example, have a Gadgeteer and one Assassin from the Bounty Hunter Career.

3) Make whatever you think each party member will play. Example: Jimmy loves combat monkeys with big swords, so give him a Marauder, while Biff is notorious for talking his way out of anything, so make him a Politico.

4) Make the OPPOSITE of what you think each party member would normally play to get them out of their ruts. Example: Jimmy is now a Doctor, while Biff is a Bodyguard.

Have fun!

Thanks for the responses, I'm only going to see one of my players before the game, so I'll wave the book at him and get him to pick something he likes, then if I'll make up at least one option for each career and let the rest of them pick.

After the first game I'll let the players change if they want to.

As for the game, I had an idea about a marvel collector type character who has an asteroid based 'museum' full of republic era artifacts (clone trooper helmets, battle driods, Jedi robes etc) and has the players doing smuggling runs for some highly illegal bits (lightsabre crystals etc). Then see where it goes from there.

Make them all Doctors.

Wookiee doctors... with the Pressure Point Talent...

Make them all Doctors.

That's a terrible idea! Then they'll all start arguing with each other and never get anything done!

But it would be fun to discover which one they fancy playing! :D

I can't help wondering what would happen if your group consisted of Warrior (9), Hero (10), Bohemian (4) and Obnoxious (6) admittedly they need Leela, Donna and... actually did 6 have any good companions?

But then what if you based your characters on Firefly or Space Rangers? ;)

Broadly I would say, Face man, Joe Gun, Doc, Hacker guy, and Crazy Bob, the pilot.

Make them all Doctors.

Wookiee doctors... with the Pressure Point Talent...

Either that or Drall.
