Royal guard interceptor pts 22
Hull & shield upgrades total to 29
Add ptl for total 31. 2 points for one more attack die and better dial? Same HP, just trading one shield for hull.

I am a huge Vader fan.
Vader, Engine Upgrade, Adrenaline Rush is money at 34 points. I think he is the best end game pilot in the game. I have been known to put a missile on him as well.
At 34 points, you have loads of options for other ships and he doesn't take stress for his actions like Int's with PtL do. I've seen him run with Expose, but I am not sold on it, I'd sooner see TL and Focus rather than Expose and Focus.
Not quite a fair comparison; The Interceptor has boost - which vader needs (and often takes) engine upgrade to duplicate. Vader is not stressed by taking two actions and has a missile slot to play with - something that gets increasingly useful as more and more missiles become available.
Finally, Vader gets his two actions without using his elite talent slot - which means the elite talent slot can be used to provide the option of another action. Squad Leader, for example; he's just about the best possible recipient for this because no-one else can use it without giving up their own action (which helps paint a cross-hair on the squad leader, since he's not using defensive actions).
Vader's dial is usually effectively better than an interceptor with PTL because in order to use PTL every round, you have to perform a green maneuver every round. Not say thing that along with 3 PS is worth the attack die, but it's not quite as clear cut.
I am a huge Vader fan.
Me too (I'm 200cm & 135kg)
Vader is never obsolete!
And something from the rational side; like Englishpete said.
Wouldn't take it to a tournament because a 3 small base Empire list is a little risky, but have played this in a league and its lots of fun:
Darth Vader
+Engine Upgrade
+Push the Limit
Soontir Fel
+Push the Limit
+Stealth Device
Turr Phennir
+Push the Limit
+Stealth Device
All three ships have 3 actions, including Boost and Barrel Roll, and they are all high PS. So they can each get out of the way, and still be focused. At the start of the game, Joust with Turr, and fly around back with Vader and Soontir. Should be easy since they all have boost and roll. Two focused attacks from behind, followed by a focused attack from Turr who can then boost and barrel roll out of the way. Your enemies are left with no attacks. Spend a round to stay away and reset, and then repeat the strategy. Plan on trying out a similar strategy with Carnor Jax, who can deny tokens, in place of Turr Phennir.
I've never understood giving Vader PTL, is the third action really worth letting your opponent that you're going to do one of like 4 maneuvers?
Generally, no. But Engine Upgrade adding boost... I'd say still, no, but potentially.
After all, a boost/barrel roll combination has a good chance to put you in a position where next turn you can't be shot at, whilst the extra action would let you (for example) pull a drive-by with cluster missiles.
PTL is 3 points, so the final upgrade for the 6 skilled Tie Interceptor is 32 (not 31).
So in the end, the answer is no, Vader is not obsolete.
Edited by BattlePriestHere was my reasoning in better detail.
Vader 29 Points (33 With engine Upgrade)
2 Shield, 3 Hull, 2 Attack Dice
TL, Focus, Barrel Roll, Evade, Boost
2 Actions @ No stress
PS9
Royal Guard Interceptor
22 Points (32 Points with Ptl, Hull, Shield)
1 Shield, 4 Hull, 3 attack Dice
Focus, Evade, Boost, Barrel Roll
2 Actions w/ Stress
Ps6
It's been shown that expose is not worth the points on vader, however if you do use it on him you now bump his cost to 37, or more commonly 35 w/ Squad leader or Swarm.
In my eyes, the interceptor has the advantage here, better dial and movement advantage over vader. Potential action denial if used to block.
The interceptor has all 2 Green, 3 forward Green, and 4 Forward Green. Giving the ability to remove the stress you acquired easily. You have 1 Higher dice which means that vader will probably need to save that focus and evade to avoid taking damage, you on the other hand could only spend 1 Evade token if shot at range 2.

You're not taking Vader to shoot with 2 dice though. You're looking for an opportunity to drop off some missiles.
As for the RGT config, why so expensive? PTL is the only thing you need on it. No point making him so expensive you can only fit 3 of those in a list. Dropping all those upgrades gives you enough for another ship, that's +25% firepower and the same amount of hull if you factor in the added PTL and evade dice.
Edited by HEROConsidering some of what is coming, Vader is no where near obsolete. Push the Limit is great, until you face a Flechette Torpedo, and have 2 stress. Thus, a likely dead Interceptor next turn.

Actually took 2nd in tournament with this exact list, missed first because time was called right before i shot with vader at range 1 to soontir. I had target lock and focus. He had 1 hull left after dueling with my soontir. I was furious. Vader wasnt even touched.

Vader is soooooo much better than a pilot with PtL. Sure TIE Interceptors might have a better dial, but if you are PtL every turn then you are stuck with only greens. I am a huge Soontir+PtL fan, but the biggest draw back is when you can't do that K-turn when you want to. Even Night beast is often better than PtL.
Don't get me wrong PtL is really cool, but it best used as an option to give you a second action when it is really useful (and you know you won't be k-turning next turn) Using PtL every turn is not really a good idea unless you are Tycho.
If you really want to compare a pilot to Vader, Look at Tycho+PtL. Still can't K-turn, but since Tycho can get as much stress as he want's and basically ignore it, he is the real PtL master.
A 3 elite Empire list won the 1st store championship of the season. Vader was in it.
Please, the top 2 squads featured Interceptors, A-wings, and a HWK. Obviously, this tournament must be disregarded, as it flies in the face of hardcore math results.

Vader also costs more than a pilot with PTL, by a good margin. At the end of the day, Vader is not really comparable to a Interceptor with PTL. They're apples and organizes down to very simplest of things. Different dials, different ships, thus different attack values, hull, shields, actions, different pilots, different PS and abilities.
As long as Vader is PS9 in an Imperial ship that can go green 1s, comes with 2 free actions, a target lock and can sport missiles, he will be used. Period.

And you can't argue with math in a game that includes chance dice rolls, varying changes due to abilities, how well a player uses asteroids, and other variations that goes beyond a single joust in a round. It's pointless to argue against numbers! Clearly the winners who used such mathematically inferior ships must have been playing against opponents that had never played before AND allowed them to cheat. The math clearly dictates the outcome of every tournament!

Most math here assumes you're jousting. If you're jousting with any of these three ships, you're doing it wrong

Turr Phennir — TIE Interceptor 25 Veteran Instincts 1 Stealth Device 3
Darth Vader — TIE Advanced 29 Elusiveness 2 Concussion Missiles 4 Stealth Device 3
Not really a difficult list to conceive. Flying it is another story.
Edited by HEROHow good will the builds be with Vader and some of ace's pilots?
I know I want to toy with a squad with Vader and Squad Leader to help Kir Kanos to get Evade tokens.
How good will the builds be with Vader and some of ace's pilots?
Probably tough to fly, but I can see them being lethal in the hands of a good player.
I know I'm going to try a Vader + Jax + Kanos build. Just not sure what to beef them up with.
