flying y-wings today

By AtomicFryingPan, in X-Wing

Hey guys so today I'm gonna be flying some y wings at my LGS and I'm gonna try both lists.

List 1 is Jan, with swarm tactics, ion turret, saboteur, and either stealth device or engine upgrade.

Dutch Vander with proton torpedo and advanced proton torpedos

gray squadron with proton torpedoes and advanced proton torpedoes.

List 2 is going to be 3 y-wings with proton torpedos and advanced proton torpedoes.

can't decide if I want to go with Dutch and 2 golds or Greys or 3 Greys or what upgrades I'll give them but I'll figure it out and fly em tonight.

These lists probably aren't the bees knees but it forces me to use things I haven't used before such as y-wings, torpedos, and saboteur, and flying 3 ships.

if your going to be firing off alot of torps, your going to need to be firing first, so probably higher PS then golds, unless you know for sure your fly vs academy ties

I'd say if you're going Ywings and you want to use a lot of ordinance, you absolutely have to have Dutch! I'd also include an Ion Turret on every ship. I'd also go Gold to get more points to work with. Putting a Turret and Advanced Prots on those three ships puts you at 96pts.

For my 2nd list was thinking Dutch with proton and advanced proton, ion turret, and r5k6. Plus 2 Greys with proton and advanced.

…If you're trying to use torps…and only 3 ships…I have no other suggestions than to say put Chewie…but nvm cause you want to try Saboteur.

Have Fun! :)

Dutch IS Essential

*You can fit Dutch, Salm, and a Grey with Advanced Torps and Normal Torps (each) for 98 points. Wouldn't be bad. Remember that Salm gets to re-roll his blanks at range 2-3

Yeah I'm thinking that anything hit by the Jan boosted protons or adv protons will be messed up and giving it a face up will make it easier to deal with the y-wings normal primary attack

I have yet to have success with y wings. Let us know how it goes. I just can't figure out why folks love ion cannons so much.

I have a bad feeling about this list.

Y-wings and their lack of maneuverability often get screwed; that's why the turret is so essential. And ion turrets only do 1 damage at a time, so they aren't great for damage unless you get them to crash into asteroids. Their high HP is misleading, since they've got such low agility.

In short, Y-wings are good support ships but not a good idea to fly them on their own

I would go with Jan (and your saboteur) with ion turret with Dutch and ion turret and Salm with torps and ion turret. Synergie for what you want to fly. You could also switch out Jan for Roark and get that PS12 for getting your torps off first. Dutch gets tha target lock, passes extra to Salm with his focus- He shoots at PS12 with a torp and rerolls blanks that he gets.

With Jan you can pass off that extra attack dice to beef up the Y's but Jan will be a big target so I would look at a shield upgrade or chewie to help her survive. With Roark you can go with that saboteur if Dutch passes his target lock to Roark in the later game stages where hits are already registered on ships.

R2 and engine mod help the Y-wings with their lack of mobility.

Also I quite like Kyle with recon and having him support a Y-wing with a blaster turret or he can hand out focus to the proton torps users whom NEED extra focus to make proton torps worth taking.

So I played 2 games with list 1 which was Jan Dutch and Grey and with 1-1 against a jan, garven, horton. Would have won the first had I not flown Dutch into an asteroid. Basic strategy was to get in close with Grey and focus, then send in Dutch to target lock and give a TL to grey, then send Jan in to swarm the grey. Solid plan which worked out beautiful the 2nd game but flying into asteroids f's it up lol. Gonna keep playing around with it and maybe use kyle. But sending 6 attack dice on an adv proton torp against an ion'd Jan is great lol. Also thinking of changing up some hwk upgrades saboteur is fun but unreliable and stealth didn't help me.

The y wing dial doesn't make you want to die?

Well I was flying against 2 same dials plus an X wing dial so I really wasn't getting out maneuvered. But I didn't mind it. I was going slow and steady trying to stay range 3 to establish TL's.

Here's what I'm planning on flying tomorrow:

Kyle Katarn + Determination + Blaster Turret + Recon Specialist + Moldy Crow (32)
Horton Salm + R2 Astromech + Proton Torpedoes + Proton Torpedoes (34)
"Dutch" Vander + R2 Astromech + Advanced Proton Torpedoes + Proton Torpedoes (34)

I initially had given an advanced and a regular torp to each Y, but then figured that Salm is garbage with an advanced, so i squeezed some extra points out.

I like that and Kyle passing out focuses makes it to you're not 100% depending on Dutch to set up TL's.

I like flying a Y if it's part of a mixed squadron. I've used the ABXY squad to good effect.

Green Squadron + VI + Stealth
Dagger Squadron + AS
Red Squadron + R2 Astro
Grey Squadron + Ion + R2 Astro

Everything at 4 or 5 PS. I'll use the Y on the edge of the scrum to ion stray ships and try to set-up someone, generally the B, to slip in behind at close range.

Try this

Dutch w/ Ion Turret, Adv Proton Torps, r5-k6

Kyle Katarn w/ Swarm Tactics, Blaster Turret, Recon Spec, Modly Crow

Gold w/ Ion Turret, Adv Proton Torps R2 Astromec

However if you want to spread out a little I think this would be better

Dutch w/ Ion Turret, Adv Proton Torps, r5-k6

Kyle Katarn w/ Swarm Tactics, Blaster Turret, Recon Spec, Modly Crow

Blue Squadron Pilot, Adv Proton Torps, Advance Sensors.

The advance sensors means you will always get your TL and Free focus from kyle when you are ready to deploy the payload. Swarm Tacts means you can move first and shoot at a PS6, which isn't bad.

I fly y wings a lot. Great ship, highly underrated. I never fly it without a turret. I would bring maybe 1 torp and put a turret on every y.

Ok so another list I'm going to try out as I enjoyed flying Jan with the grey and dutch,

Jan-Ion-Nien-Determination

Dutch-ADV torps-Proton Torps-r2

Horton-Proton-Proton-R2

This takes me to 100 points. The r2's allow the y-wings to dogfight better without a turret and 5 dice with rerolls from horton+Jan is no joke.
