Big Imperial Ships?

By bayruun, in X-Wing

With the Rebels getting the transport and the CR90, it only makes sense for the Imperials to get some comparably sized ships. The trouble is, most Imperial ships are much too large. I doubt even the fairly small Gladiator star destroyer will be made, and the rest (from Vindicator and Victory upwards) are larger.

My vote would be for the Lancer frigate. Its strengths vary considerably from the CR90 and it's not quite too large to use. It is quite powerful (being a hedgehog of quad lasers), but it lacks turbolasers, putting it at a theoretical disadvantage against the CR90. Other "small" large ships include the Nebulon B (which could be Rebel or Imperial), but it's on the large side of things. There's also the Carrack, but it's a pocket cruiser and much too powerful for this game.

Are there other possibilities I'm missing?

I agree; I don't think we'll ever see an SD, but we could easily see a frigate or something along those lines. Perhaps they will do a 180 and try for a different mechanic than the CR90 - they could try for a Broadside Cruiser?

Time will tell!

Didn't the Empire use the DP 20 at some point? Maybe not, but I think it could be a good option if so.

The Broadside is the same keel as the Gladiator, so no reason not to make both if they make one. However, at 500 meters, it's rather large. Given that the CR90 is 150 meters, I think either the 250 meter Lancer or the 300 meter Nebulon B is more likely. I can't imagine anything bigger fitting on the table, and even then, at twice the length of the corvette, the Nebulon is a stretch. We'll see how much they want to fudge the scale, though. I'm in favor of bigger ships even if it means significant departures from scale.

I will not, however, be okay with an ISD model, as it *should* take up most of my living room.

EDIT: Good catch on the DP20. It's an ugly beast, with a bridge like a bucket, but it's the right size...

Those space platforms from tie fighter would be cool and pretty similar to DS9 from star trek.

I don't care what ship they give the empire, so long as that expansion comes with a TIE Advanced as an escort, and includes 3-4 NEW Advanced Pilots- similar to the new X-Wing pilots that are coming with the Transport.

Excellent Points!

The Tartan is around that size as well; I would mind seeing one of those hit the shelves!

Since the Lancer was designed for starfighter hunting ( http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Lancer-class_frigate ) I can see that being a fine addition to the X-Wing game.

I'd buy one.

Oh my!

I have a friend who has a... model that looks very much like the Lancer. :)

Not sure the scale is quite right, though...

I prefer the Lancer, but any Imperial ship would be welcome.

The tartan is a better looking ship with the same function imo. Less like... Male anatomy...

While I do like the Tartan, it was only in 2 rts games, and the Lancer has been in many more canon sources. I also think it looks more Imperial than the Tartan. Also I think that the Star Galleon would be really cool and open up many more scenarios for an epic format, since it is a capital ship that also carries tons of cargo. Rebel raid anyone?

Another thing to consider. The CR-90 isn't actually a Rebel ship, they used them but so did the Empire. So they could just do a repainted version with Imperial markings and cards.

I would expect the Corvette to remain the largest ship in the game, so I think even a Tartan (which looks great and would otherwise be a nice addition to the game) is a bit too large. I think the Imperial Customs Corvette is a better bet--visually distinctive, and the right role and right size.

I'm sure they will at some point make a Star Destroyer. I'm just sure of it. The scale will be different, but it'll probably take up half the board, and cost 250 bucks. The interview with the devs from Gencon seemed to suggest that it was in the works.

They could use a carrack light cruiser, altho it might be a tad big.

A 3-foot Star Destroyer (Imperial II-class) would be in 1:1600 scale, or about 1/6th the scale of the starfighters, and it would still be almost impossible to actually maneuver around. If a Star Destroyer does ever come into play, and IMO that's a big "if", I'm sure it will be as terrain instead of as a playable piece.

Terrain sounds more reasonable, with maybe just the bridge as an actual PIECE. However... I think they know alot of players would LOVE a physical Star Destroyer to actually play with. So maybe we'll see a Victory Class, as an actual Ship. I'd imagine that maybe it wouldn't move at all.

Or they might just do a game for big ship battles.

The 2 capital ships I would like to see are the Storm Commando Escort Carrier and the Gozanti Cruiser. I had a lot of fun blowing up the Escort Carriers in Rogue Squadron III. And the new version of the Gozanti Cruiser looks neat in all of the upcoming Rebels art. Perhaps it could come with more TIE Fighter pilots.

And really, looking back at some Rogue Squadron II videos, I'm fine with the out of scale Destroyer depicted there. Worth every cent of the $200+ price tag.

So maybe we'll see a Victory Class, as an actual Ship.

The Victory class is still 900m long, so it has the same problems that a ISD does.

Assassin corvette. Its is used by Imperial Storm Commandos only. Since the REB ships come with a fighter they could throw in TIE Hunters which are also exculsive to Storm Commandos.

They could also repaint the big Reb ships and sell them as Imps since they are used by the Empire, or use the the mod versions of those ships.

I like the Gozanti so much I'm considering scratch building one... will try to follow the ones built and posted here if I actually get the motivation to do it.. though, might make mine slightly larger for looks.

If FFG has demonstrated anything at this point, it is that there is no parity in their lineup. If you hold your breath expecting ships to be released in complete cycles, you're going to find yourself sorely disappointed - and very likely unconscious.
