I made it out to the Murfreesboro store championship on 3/1. It was being held in the student union building at MTSU, had a very nice, large room with a sound system to play Star Wars music the entire tournament to set the mood. 7 total players including myself and Nate (Ketricel). We played 4 rounds with a cut to the top 2.
My deck lists:
LS:
Jedi Affiliation
A Hero’s Journey x2
The Secret of Yavin 4 x2
Questionable Contacts x2
Wookie Life Debt x2
Asteroid Sanctuary x2
DS:
Sith Affiliation
Fall of the Jedi x2
Counsel of the Sith x2
The Emperor’s Web x2
The Executor Arrives x2
Trandoshan Terror x2
Match 1 – Vs Brian
My first match was against one of the other out-of-town players. I had played Brian once before in the Louisville regional last year and knew he was a good player.
Game 1: My DS vs his Slueth/Swindle/Rebel Assault. I’m unable to build up a sufficient wall of blockers as he finds 3 of 4 Swindleds and a Rebel Assault to keep my board presence at bay. He also manages to start with Mobilize, Anoat, Raise the Stakes to put pressure on early. I’m luckily able to hold the force and stall long enough to keep the dial at a respectable 7.
Game 2: My LS vs his Devastating Sith. He keeps the momentum for much of the game, but I manage to ping through enough damage to keep things interesting. He decides not to commit Motti going into my last turn with the dial on 11, allowing me to ping Emperor’s Web for 1. Needing 3 damage and holding only a Falcon in hand while he had 2 blockers (Motti and a Kuati Security Team), I draw Luke, Luke, Falcon, Let the Wookie Win, Let the Wookie Win. I play Luke, win edge, and use double LtWW to clear the second blocker for the win.
Match Result: Modified loss, 4-5
Match 2 – Vs Allen
One of the local players who was also the guy running the tournament (and did a great job keeping everything running smoothly).
Game 1: My DS vs his Pure Jedi. I’m able to keep the board clear and go aggressive to accelerate. Game ends with me up 3-0 on objectives.
Game 2: My LS vs his Sith Control. He starts with Ghosts of the Dark Side flipped, which makes it difficult for me to grab the force back. I’m lucky enough to find my mains and my tricks fast enough to plow damage through still and win with the dial on 7.
Match Result: Full Win, 8-0
Match 3 – Vs Bryan
Another of the local players for round 3.
Game 1: My DS vs his Pure Jedi. Lots of pure Jedi decks from the local players. I get a good board presence early. Consecutive turn Obi-Wans end up meeting Aggression and Bossk, Vader, and the Executor go aggressive to end the game up 2-0
Game 2: My LS vs his Navy. He starts with Imperial Blockade and General’s Imperative, making my opening Luke take all of my resources while keeping him ahead on hand size for the first couple of turns. I’m able to continue follow up Luke with some protecting backup the next turn and then find Han and Trust Your Feelings to help close out the game with the dial on 5.
Match Result: Full Win, 8-0
Match 4 – Vs Nate
At this point, I’m sitting 2 nd with 20 points (behind Brian with 21). Nate’s 3 rd with 16. The 4 th place player has 13. I know going in that as long as I at least split the games, I’ll make the top 2 cut and have my rematch with Brian for the championship.
Game 1: My LS vs his Hoth Sith. He starts with Web, Killing Cold, and Vader’s Fist. I open up with Chewie and a Guardian. He never finds anything to effectively block Chewie, and runs out of sacrifice fodder for Killing Cold while the dial is on 7.
Game 2: My DS vs his Super Friends. At this point, I’m locked into the top 2 no matter what happens. Nate needs to win the game to guarantee himself a top 4 spot. He plays Super Friends very well and is clearly ahead. I probably could have stayed alive long enough to win the tie breaker at least, but Nate has a long drive and wants to get going so I just concede that game to let him hit the road.
Match Result: Modified Loss, 4-5
Finals – Vs Brian
A rematch of the first match of the day, hopefully this time with different results.
Game 1: My DS vs his LS. Completely different from the opening match. I flood the board early and he can never threaten. I end the game with attacks from the Executor and Palpatine followed by 3 Executor triggers from ISB Liaisons and a Holocron to take out 2 objectives and win up 2-0
Game 2: My LS vs his DS. Once again night and day from the first match. I get out quick Wookies and tactics, followed by Chewie and more tactics the next turn. He can’t keep units on the board against that level of firepower and the game is over quickly with the dial on 4.
Match Result: Full win, 8-0
Overall a great tournament. The facilities were great, and it’s always fun to meet new people and play some cards. It was also nice to only see one Sleuth deck (even if I did have to play it twice). Congrats to Brian on a great couple of matches, and thanks to the MTSU crew for putting on a fun event!
