Interesting ways to distinguish TIEs?

By R22, in X-Wing

I like that the Rebels look like a rag tag group, have individualized ships, and differing colors vs. the Imperial uniformity. I'd like to stay true that flavor. BUT I'd also like to make the differing TIES appear to be different ships -- not replicas of the same ship. I know some people repaint their TIEs in ANH gray or ROTJ blue, that's a nice touch. Any other ideas? Ways to keep the Imperial uniformity but grant a dash of differentiation? Besides combat damage. Thoughts?

On some shuttles I put large Imperial emblems on the wings and some chevrons on a couple TIEs, also some skull and crossed bones on a couple TIEs also. Will throw some stripes on my "School Bus guards" TIEs for fun.

And that's the key for me.. fun... I love doing repaints and adding personal markings. I can link the ones I did.

Ways to make them a little different:

Add kill and/or tour of duty markings.

Add Squadron and/or ship markings/numbers

Add wear and tear effects, like pant chipping, rust, minor battle damage.

Add Ace markings and/or emblems.

Add slogans (very common on Russian tanks during WWII)

Haha.. I was thinking of slogans on the wing panels on the TIEs.. 'all guts' in hand painted Aurebesh.. haha or something simular.

I painted the cockpit glass of some of my TIEs red. I figured it made sense with sll the red lights inside. There is also a hasbro TIE that has the same thing.

It looks pretty cool

simply paint the ion engine glow a different colour. You can choose from deep red, pink, bright white, yellow even

Stripes on the wings seems to be 'the thing' for squadron markings: both the 2nd/181st with their red bloodstripes and gamma squadron with their white stripes.

I painted hello kitty on the sides of mine.... No not really...lol

Blood stripes are actually only for those in the 181st with 10 kills.. so .. it's not a squadron marking.. it's earned

Ooh, I like that idea! I think I'll distinguish my 3 squadrons with black, orange, and red cockpit glass. Now, does Black squadron get the black tint or the red?!?

ooh, I like that. Any pictures?

I can take some. For black squadron, since the windows are already black, maybe paint them white? Or paint the ship white and leave the windows black? Not sure, that's a tough one.

I like the 'red light' effect you are talking about, but if I would do that I would only do the top half of the 'glass' and the center piece, the console ... when depicted and in models, seems to take up the bottom area fairly solidly.. I would go for that effect, and see how that looked..

Attack Squadrons has a bunch of interesting paintjobs that you'll likely be able to see once it goes beta and the NDA is listed.

One tip from SWAS, you could paint a blood stripe (through the middle and vertical, outside of the wing) on a TIE fighter.

I like to paint red pentagons on my Elite pilots:
