Instant kill meta bomber squad?

By KovuTalli, in X-Wing

So I've been theory crafting a bomber list, that runs something along the lines of.

Gamma Squad + Proton bombs (23)

Gamma Squad + Proton bombs (23)

Gamma Squad + Proton bombs (23)

Backstabber (16)

Winged Gundark (15)

Total: 100 Points.

Considering Protons Ignore Shields. if you can drop all 3 in the middle of a Rebel 3/4 ship list, you are guaranteed to kill an X, A or B wing, with a good chance of killing a Y-wing or HWK if at least one crit is 2 Damage.

Best if you can get your bombers near their intended targets then Straight 4 away and deploy bombs.

You also have the two named Two Ties for back up/finishing off.

Main drawbacks is you will need to get past one turn of shooting to get in to range and any enemy with high PS will most likely GTFO away from the bombers or just not get in to range 1 with them at all.

This would most likely work best against any kind of XXBB or XXX Combos, it would also mean swarm players would need to be careful and/or concentrate all fire on taking down one bomber at a time.

Thoughts?

I like the idea, really. I would use the cheaper bomber though, that saves you 6 points, then use 3 Academies instead of the 2 named. Several effects here:

You have 6 ships. More ships are always better.

Your Acadmies are PS1, you move first. Block all landing zones that enables the enemy to escape the bomb trap. Move the bombers, drop the bombs. Watch the enemy struggle to get out there, just to be blocked by the academies, probably not moving anywhere.

I see the game ending with 1 or 2 bombers still alive, everything else dead, after the 3rd or forth round.

I really like that, Sir, it looks fantastic on paper. I will fly it (with the modifications I mentioned). With 99 points you might even have the initiative, really necessary here for the asteroid placement and choosing the area where the fight will be fought.

It's similar to a list I've been meaning to try, with the 3 Gammas with Turr Phennir + PTL + Stealth as a flanker. Bombers actually aren't bad dogfighters once their ordinance is spent.

See, if I'm going Scimitars, I go with Proximity Mines instead. I like higher PS with Protons and Seismics.

If you're spamming proton bombs, you're more likely to get 2 off for sure if you go with 4 scimitars with bombs instead, which leaves 16 points to use as you will.

Most squads kill a gamma before it drops the bomb, so you're really only looking at dropping 2. Many good squads have the capability of dropping 2 gammas before you get the bomb off, so then you're really hurting. Plus most players are wary of flying behind the bombers, so you'll get a few turns of them turning around instead. Its not bad, but not necessarily ideal.

Try spamming with 4, and good luck!

3GS+

Gamma x3

Scimitar

Academy pilot

I like 3 seismic, 2 concussions, 1 cluster for my load outs. Proton torps work too.

I wish they shot missiles before Winged Gundark. He would be such good tech if he was lower PS.

I've been looking at maybe 3 Bombers and a Firespray.

3x Scimitar + Proton bombs.

Firespray + Ion cannon.

Comes in at 99 points, and a fairly tanky list at 28 Health total.

Ion cannon to help get at least one ship in a flight path it cant get out of to make sure you get use out of the bombs, and the firespray to help clean up whatever is left, or drop Ion cannon and take Prox Mine or Seismic to get even more AoE/Area Denial in the list or one of the 4 cost missiles such as cluster for a big strike against a Falcon/Firespray/Shuttle/B-wing

Cool idea. Would be fun to watch a list like this.

When it comes to ionization let's not forget the upcoming upgrades with a missile that will Ionize even a big ship. Ion Cannon may be cheaper for reuse but that missile can let Bombers do their own ionizing. Maybe something like:

Jonus + Proton Bomb (+ 1 point EPT if you want to avoid initiative)

Scimitar + Ion Pulse + Proton Bomb (X3)

I've got two lists along this line, without Jonus.

2x Scimitar + Ion Pulse + Proton Bomb

2x Gamma + Ion Pulse + Proton Bomb

Vs

4x Gamma + Flechette Torpedoes (Stress!) + Proton Bomb

The Scimitar x2/Gamma x2 was my first thought after looking at Scimitar x4 and seeing 4 points left but thought Jonus would help make sure the Ion Pulse hit and also gives a later moving bomber. Thought about a different loadout on Jonus as well but that would hurt the goal.

I haven't seen the Flechette Torpedoes yet. Stress may not be as good as ionized but it does help predict movement for better bomb drops.
