Species in Edge of the Empire: What's Needed? What's Next?

By DavenQuint, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Actually, another species that I'd like to see that I can't believe I forgot.

Squibs. There is a definite shortage of short blue fuzziness in this system. I've done my own take (from which I've been told does a good job of capturing the essential Squibiness of the species), but I'd be curious to see how FFG writes them up.

You have. We have someone playing a Squib in the game I'm in using your rules.

Koovy :D

Togruta and Zabrak are highest on my list. I have a feeling we'll be seeing them in F&D.

I wouldn't mind seeing Togorians. I'm not much of a furry, but a Tai Lung Sith Lord would be a fun BBEG.

I also suspect we'll see Mirialan's in F&D.

Devaronians, Cereanans

Devaronians would be a good call.

I imagine they'll introduce the mandalorians as a race/affiliation, maybe with bonuses. Just like you can be a human from Corellia but not take the Corellian human bonuses, any race can subscribe to the ideals of mandalorians.

Aren't the mandos gone during this time frame? I'm really asking... I don't follow EU all that much, but I thought I heard something about him rebuilding them.

My tops.... bith, gamms, ungnaught, and gotal. That said, I would poop cuff-links for Lepi.

Something about giant, green, carnivorous, easter-bunnies just does it for me.

My short list includes everyone that was in the cantina scene. These are all pretty iconic, even if they never showed up again. I could also live with Gungans and Ewoks, providing that something interesting is done with them, rather than just being troll species. Imagine opening whatever book and finding art for some greasy Gungan smuggler or some kind of Ewok cyberdoc (a little far fetched, but you see where I'm going). I don't want them to just be there for completeness.

Honestly, I really don't want to see Mando anything. They're just far too loaded. Mando are worse than Jedi for the forced inclusion/fanboying. Include them and everyone and their dog is going to want to play a Mando bounty hunter. Boring. We don;t need that.

FYI, the Ewok hate comes from Jedi being openly regarded as the weakest movie, and the whole battle is quite odd and out of place for some. IIRC, the Battle of Endor was supposed to be the Battle of Kashyyyk (which would have been about 100 times more awesome). Apparently, it was changed to Ewoks as some Vietnam War/Vietcong commentary, which would be super tacky and offputting if true. More hate comes from the fact that Ewoks got two movies, their own TV series, and apparently a dedicated comic series. According to Wookipedia, Endor is the most documented location in Star Wars. Kind of obnoxious.

Wouldn't it be hilarious if the non-Force using characters in F&D turn out to be Mandalorians?

It's interesting, in the Star Wars Essential Guide to Warfare, there's an account of the Ewoks from the point of view of a Stormtrooper that survived the battle. It specifically states that he's seen all the propaganda videos that make the "Indigines" as he calls them look cute. They weren't cute, he says, and they were armed with arrows coated in deadly neurotoxins. The picture that accompanies it has the Ewoks looking rather vicious... It actually made me smile.

That. Is. Epic.

I'd like to see the TOR species released. Granted, I think the Miraluka are probably better saved for F&D, considering they're all Force sensitive to some degree. I'd like to see Mirialans, Cathar, Zabrak and Rattataki, though. One of my favorite characters I played in TOR was my Rattataki bounty hunter. I'd love to recreate her in SWFFG.

Oh. I'd like to see an official Kaleesh write-up, too. The one I made for a player in my game works well enough, but I always like to have official stats for stuff like that.

And Zeltrons are always welcome.

You mean the Taung? Or a template that can be applied to PCs to make them Mandos? Or would the Mandos need a Human-variant like Corellians and then a Death Watch-style template that can be applied to any PC who is accepted into the warrior society?

I was referring to the high-octane version of Mandalorian Supercommandoes so we have a non-Forceful option that still has an over-the-top "destiny" aspect. This would fit if the fears that Jedi don't prove to be very well balanced (not that I believe that this will be the case) ring true as we could have another wacky option.

Cool thread. In response to Lasat though....has it been confirmed Zeb IS a Lasat? Filoni just says "new species" in the interviews. They might not want what Lasat baggage does exist. I'm not saying this because I know something (I don't), I'm just curious if anyone saw something that confirmed they are considering Zeb a Lasat for the purposes of the show. . .

I forgot all about Kaleesh. Yes, give me one of those please!

They are vicious! However, I still have to wonder how stone-tipped arrows from such small (and presumably weak bows from the looks of it) manage to pierce stormtrooper armour. Well, I guess this is one of the Things-man-was-not-meant-to-know. ;)

When I was still playing and mastering the old D6 edition, the deadliest character I ever met was an Ewok warrior. He started with a crude stone axe, a wood spear and a bow, which was quite under effective I admit, but was very talented in the sneaky hit and run tactics. He quickly looted a blaster riffle and bought a vibro axe as soon as he can.

Sneak attack with a a vibro axe are devastating, and these sneaky bastards can also be quite good sharpshooters once they grasped how to use a blaster. Beware of the teddy bear, he is a natural hunter...

I think making a Ewok who becomes something like a bounty hunter could be extremely interesting. Their small size - and primitive beginnings - aside, it'd be awesome to see such a character progress into a sincerely potent protagonist.

As an aside, a friend of mine pointed out that Ewoks are possibly cannibals. Apparently there are a bunch of subtle references to them eating their opponents (Luke and Co. being tied up over fires on a spit, Ewoks eating the defeated Stormtroopers at the end of the movie, etc). It was kind of messed up.

Wow! Did I miss that?! O_O

They wouldn't be cannibals unless the living Ewoks were eating dead Ewoks. Just because they're going to eat humans doesn't make them cannibals, since they're not eating the dead of their own kind.

I hope not, the whole "only a mando can kill a jedi" thing really bothers me...

Agree, the Traviss versions of Mandalorians is one of those things best left in the past and generally forgotten.

Besides, I'd say Mandos are really more of a culture than being an actual species. I only did the Saga Edition of the Taung for Galaxy at War because Rodney wanted to include them, even if they'd generally been considered a dead species for a couple thousand years by the time the Clone Wars rolled around. I seem to recall reading during my research that the last Taung was the Mandalore that was slain by Revan during the Mandalorian Wars, but that was quite a few years ago.

It's a big galaxy, I'm sure a colony or two could have survived somewhere. :D

As far as ewoks, not being cannibals because they don't eat their own, most sci-fi that I know of has re-defined cannibalism to include any sentient eating another sentient so I usually look at it from that viewpoint.
