Species in Edge of the Empire: What's Needed? What's Next?

By DavenQuint, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Thus far, we have official stats for a number of species for Edge of the Empire. What species do you think should be included going forward? Which books would you put them in? Which ones are needed or make sense to play?

Playable Species

  • Human and Corellian: Core Rulebook/Suns of Fortune
  • Aqualish: Dangerous Covenants
  • Bothan: Core Rulebook
  • Chiss: Enter the Unknown
  • Drall: Suns of Fortune
  • Droid: Core Rulebook
  • Duros: Enter the Unknown
  • Gand: Core Rulebook
  • Klatooinian: Dangerous Covenants
  • Rodian: Core Rulebook
  • Selonian: Suns of Fortune
  • Toydarian: Enter the Unknown
  • Trandoshan: Core Rulebook
  • Twi'lek: Core Rulebook
  • Weequay: Dangerous Covenants
  • Wookiee: Core Rulebook

I know we're getting several new ones in Age of Rebellion, but I imagine they'll also be included in future EotE material as well. The big ones that I think FFG should consider going forward (be it in four future career sourcebooks or other sourcebooks) include:

  • Arkanian
  • Bith
  • Cathar
  • Chadra-Fan
  • Devaronian
  • Dresselian
  • Gran
  • Ithorian
  • Kel Dor
  • Mon Calamari
  • Nautolan
  • Nikto (Hutt Space Sourcebook anyone?)
  • Quarren
  • Sullustan
  • Togruta
  • Verpine
  • Zabrak

Zabraks. Zygerrians. Togruta. Nautolan. Those would be my most wants.

Chances are most of these are already under consideration, given the lead time it takes to put these books together. We know that Mon Calamari, Gran, and Ithorian are all part of the Age of Rebellion Beta. Right now I think the priority will be given to anything seen in the movies, followed closely by what we see in Clone Wars, and very likely the new Rebels series. I expect we'll see Lasat come to the fore at some point, although if someone really wanted to play one in the short term, I'd just suggest starting with Wookie stats.

As for others, I know there's going to be the "traditional" request for Mandalorians (human and otherwise) at some point.

The Weequay description talks about the Houk. I would really like to see the Houk (or is the plural form Houks?) detailed.

I would also like to see a few more Silhoutte 0 and even a Silhouette 2 species or two (Togorian, Yuzzem).

I would love it if there were 'sub-species' of droids. I think that of all the races, they need a bit more options.

I would have to put my vote in for Trianii.

Good points. So I'll break it out a little more given the new prioritization that we'll likely see coming from the "retooling" of Star Wars under Disney.

Would Herglics count as Silhouette 2? They're awfully big, but then again, wookiees are big too, but only Silhouette 1.

I'm curious about Jawas, or Tusken raiders for that matter, is the reason they'd be non playable species because of the isolationist nature of both groups, particularly the latter?

Generally speaking they're both primitive and isolationist. What careers would you put a Tusken Raider in? Or a Geonosian? Playable species should meet a certain criteria in that there's some broadness to them.

I mean, you could have a Jawa Technician very easily--but Smuggler? Explorer? Colonist? I'm all for having stats for them (in case GM's want to run hilarious campaigns with Jawa Marauders or Tusken Scholars or Ewok Smugglers), but I think it's understood that the official material probably will steer clear of putting them in the 'Playable' category.

We have a Jawa Marauder who is pretty bad ass. The player wants to change peoples perception of Jawas. Our GM just laughs to himself and throws tons of obstacles in the way. Heck, even the Jawa don't take him seriously.

I'd like to get stats for the Zeltrons and Herglics. :)

I doubt it for the Selkath. They became primitive and are now an entirely slave species.

I'm expecting the more prominent species, like from the original films. Bith would be fun, and so would Devaronian. But I doubt the lesser known (and more importantly, less common) species will get much show time. The inclusion of Drall and Selonians was likely only because a) Duros already had been added, and b) they shared a system with the Corellians.

Good point on the Selkath--although there is a Selkath bounty hunter in The Clone Wars television series so perhaps that'll provide some precedent. If they do sourcebooks for more sectors (i.e. Hutt Space or the Greater Javin), we might get some Drall/Selonian type second tier playable species.

A Hutt Space sourcebook could include the Nikto (which is a prominent one), Vodrans, Nimbanel, and Sakiyans.

I have a question how does everyone find so much infomation besides the movies seen them and the clone wars tv show and i know of wookiepedia and read some of th comics but were else is there to search

I own just about every Star Wars novel out there. I've been reading them for 20 years. I've played most of the video games, the card games, and Edge of the Empire is the third Star Wars RPG system I've been exposed to---basically, I've got 20 years of massive fandom to draw upon!

Wookieepedia helps too...

Ewoks and Gungans. FFG needs to get to work on those. :D

In all seriousness, there's a whole host of species for FFG to cover. With approximately 5 or 6 species per core rulebook (not counting Humans or reprints) and then 3 new species per supplement (based on Enter the Unknown, Suns of Fortune, and now Dangerous Covenants), it's going to take them a very long time to cover all the different species that are out there. Cyril and myself did write-ups for sixty-something species for the Unofficial Species Menagerie, and there were dozens more that we hadn't touched upon (mostly as we were starting to get tired of doing species builds by that point).

About the only species I'd really like to see get write-ups at this point in time are pretty much the Zabraks, Togruta, and Zeltrons. Those first two would be strong contenders for making their debut in Force & Destiny, while Zeltrons might be an option for the eventual Colonist supplement. The majority of other species that I'd want to see that weren't in the EotE core rulebook (Mon Cal and Sullustans) have already been published, either in EotE or for Age of Rebellion. I still wouldn't mind seeing Gungans and Ewoks at some point down the road. Gungans because it's fun to subvert people's expectations and have a Gungan PC that's a bonafide badass, and Ewoks just because I was still young enough when Return of the Jedi came out that I don't hold a grudge against the teddy bear brigade.

I don't dislike any of the species - even Gungans and Ewoks - and would particularly like the latter to be stated. Hard to think of which book they'd be thrown into though with a thematic fit... unless FFG bring out an adventure scenario focused around Endor (or a non-Endor-based Ewok NPC... SWTOR, anyone?).

I'd like to see Togruda, Kel Dor, and Miraluka.

Would love to see Jawas next. Short, dark and mysterious.

Love the idea of the Jawa Marauder, able to walk around nonchalantly and then out of no where open up a can of Whoop-ass :)

>>>About the only species I'd really like to see get write-ups at this point in time are pretty much the Zabraks, Togruta, and Zeltrons.

Oh, so much this. Let's have races most people will actually want as PCs before we get the obscure niche stuff. I'm happy to have the weird and wonderful races coming later, but I'd prefer to see the humanlike ones released first.

Me too. Never got the hate for them. Always struck me as a hipster thing for the Generation X crowd:

'Ooh, look how edgy I am, I hate ewoks!'

Rishi! Rishi! Rishi! (football style chant) XD

I always wanted an official Rishi stats.

I concur. What exactly was the issue with Ewoks? Sure, it was a bit wonky that they managed to take down trained stormtroopers, but that can be explained away via their advantage of surprise and their familiarity with the environment. I mean, once the initial shock of their attack was overcome by the stormtroopers, the little fuzzballs did get killed en masse.

And a lot of people say "they're a purely kid-centered aspect!" Well... yes... Star Wars was aimed as a young audience, so what's wrong with that? And I suppose it was their kid-friendly appearance that made it all the more "ouch..." when you saw them get killed. One touching moment I recall was when the two Ewoks are running together, and then get blown to the floor; one gets up and tries to flee, but realises that his friend isn't moving anymore. :(

Actually, another species that I'd like to see that I can't believe I forgot.

Squibs. There is a definite shortage of short blue fuzziness in this system. I've done my own take (from which I've been told does a good job of capturing the essential Squibiness of the species), but I'd be curious to see how FFG writes them up.

Only my 2 cents, but what we "need" is:

  • Gamorrean (Hutt Space Sourcebook)
  • Gotal
  • Gran (AoR)
  • Ithorian (AoR)
  • Mon Calamari (AoR)
  • Quarren
  • Sullustan (AoR)
  • Zabrak

What I would like to see:

  • Besalisk
  • Gungan (Gungans are cool and they kicked Jar Jar out)
  • Kitonak (Hutt Space Sourcebook)
  • Nikto (Hutt Space Sourcebook)
  • Orfites (anyone remember the Elrood sector?)
  • Togruta
  • Vratix (I just love giant four-legged bugs)

I would like to see Aleena.

You have. We have someone playing a Squib in the game I'm in using your rules.

Also, I'm using your Caamasi, but I'd like to see the FFG take on them as well.
