Tournament List

By Bohrdumb, in X-Wing

Playing in my first big tournament tomorrow, here is the list I am considering:

2 X Red Squadron + Proton Torpedoes

1 x Rookie Pilot

1 x Green Squad + Push the Limit + Stealth Device

I know people aren't big on ordinance, but I like having a bit more of a punch for an 'alpha strike.' Especially if I'm up against a Swarm or low-agi Rebel ships. After that, it's up to me to actually out pilot my enemy. I love the Green Squad pilot, for the maneuverability, and ability to flank.

Anything else I should keep in mind?

I posted a similar list in another Thread.

1x Wedge + R2D2 + Swarm tactics + Adv protons.

2x Rookie Pilot

1x Prototype Pilot

100 points. You get the PS bid as you get to shoot first with Wedge and any other ship at range 1 - best if its a Rookie, and if you can get your TL first combat and Range 1 focus 2nd combat you can roll 5 dice with a good chance of hitting all 5 dice. with -1 agi for defender because of wedges abilties.

Looks pretty solid. I rather like it. Simple, well-thought out. It Will struggle against high PS squads, but those aren't all that common (see thread on Quantity vs Quality).

Tell us how it goes

So if I were tweaking your list, I would pull both of the torpedoes out. The good news is that you already have a Green Squadron with Push the Limit, and Push the Limit + Concussion Missiles is a very nice combination--the average hits and crits jump up to 3.7. That leaves you with 23+23+4=50 points to spend on the other two fighters (currently Red Squadron), and you want an alpha strike.

If you want to keep X-wings, I'd go with something like Wedge + Rookie Pilot. Wedge is going to be a priority target, which will require that you change the way you fly, but it could work. (And Wedge counts as an alpha strike all by himself, honestly.) Alternately, since you're liking the long-distance hits, you could run Rookie Pilot with Blue Squadron + Heavy Laser Cannon. That squad would look like this...

EDIT: Ooh, forgot about your Stealth Device. That's probably not necessary, since the A-wing won't be an early target anyway, and with Push the Limit it's already got plenty of defense. I'd drop that to buff the Blue Squadron just a little bit more, and go ahead and grab initiative against PS2.

  • Blue Squadron Pilot (22) + Heavy Laser Cannon (7) + Fire Control System (2)
  • Green Squadron Pilot (19) + Push the Limit (3) + Concussion Missiles (4)
  • Rookie Pilot (21)
  • Rookie Pilot (21)

Baby Blue there is awfully easy to kill, and is the clear focusing target.

I'd drop the FCS in favor of two generic Astromech Droids on the Xs, to keep you from having too many eggs in that basket.

Thanks for all the replies. I don't own any B-wings though, and the guy I would borrow them from is also playing in the tournament and will be using them.

As for the A-wing, I love the Stealth Device, and I love throwing together a Focus and an Evade when the moment is right and just watching my opponent whiff over and over. I also think Concussion Missiles are terrible against anyone with decent Agi . And the hits on the Proton are better than you're stating because you can roll over a Focus without having to have taken the action - and I like them on the Reds because I'm likely to get some shots off at low PS pilots.

Other iterations could include Tycho+PTL+SD+Assault missiles and 3 Rookies; Green+PTL+SD, Garven Dreis, and 2 Rookies.

Edit: Also thinking 2 Rooks, my Green combo, and Wedge with Protons.

Vorpal Swords comments on the torpedoes and expected damage is something to consider as an "expected" 2.7 hits isn't much better than 2.3. He does brush off the range 3 benefit however were your opponent is likely to roll fewer evades which will lower that 2.3 average.

Now even if you want to keep to shots of ordnance it may be an idea to push some of it onto the A-Wing. PtL is nice for the fast TL + Focus missile shot and other things. If you pulled both torps one could go back as a missile and the other points could upgrade an X-Wings or three.

How about Wedge, 2 Rooks, and a Green with PtL, SD, and Conussion Missiles?

Wedge naturally brings the firepower up a bit, and my Green has missiles for a small alpha strike, and is hard as hell to hit.

It can work, but then so can the original, although Wedge is likely to get picked as the "prime" target of the group and be gunned down first if given a reasonable chance.

Although it is a gamble one of the thing Reds have going for them over Rooks is that PS 4 shoots before the PS 2. You'll find people gaming for those faster shots by using PS 3 or their own PS 4 ships to gain an advantage over Rooks and Blues.

I'd consider changing the Concussion Missile for an Assault Missile and then have 3 Reds leaving you at 99 points if you want initiative. If you don't then throw in an R2 or R5.
