Carnor Jax and Oppertunist

By SmartCookie, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Carnor Jax prohibits the enemy from using Focus and Evade tokens as well as performing the action if within range1 of him. However, a ship might have performed the action before Carnor Jax ends up withing range 1 of them.

Oppertunist says " When attacking, if the defender does not have any focus or evade tokens, you may receive 1 stress token to roll 1 additional attack die."

So, if the ships HAS the tokens Oppertunist can't be used even if the ship is within range1 of Carnor Jax?

You have answered your own question.

If the target has a token then Opportunist doesn't work. Carnor Jax needs to be within range 1 of the targets move or the target could choose to take a focus/evade token before C.J. could block that action.

Thanks, just needed confirmation I was reading it correcty.

Carnor Jax's ability is very powerful, but since you need to fly him very close to your enemy to make it work, I'm afraid that most of the time, he will be targeted and killed before you can say 'Jax'.

He will definitely need that royal guard interceptor title and defensive modifications/abilities.

He's also the first thing that makes Captain Kagi useful.

My suggestion is to use Jax as a flanking unit and do your best to keep him behind as many targets as possible, while within range 1. No small feat, of course, but then again, his ability isn't some minor inconvenience for your opponent to ignore. Push the Limit comes to mind, as this would make him even more difficult to get away from.

Keep in mind that if you are using Jax and he hasn't moved yet, your opponent is less likely to use focus or evade out of fear of it being useless if Jax comes in range. This is one of my favourite parts of Jax's ability, as it effects the opponent on a physiological level.

Captain Kagi is already useful if you give it a go. Drawing TL's away from softer ships and forcing use of focus with sensor jammer is a pain for people. As well as being a rather high pilot skill of course, though him and jax I am sure will be close friends.

I totally agree. Jax is worth the points just to make your opponent guess and worry about him. I am sure that people will be taking TL or boost or whatever more when he is on the board just in case.
