Looking at purchasing a droid. What I don't understand is some have skill ranks higher then characteristic ranks (I.E. Astromech Droid). Does that mean they use yellow dice at that rank, or is there some way to upgrade the characteristic ranks of the droid to meet those skill ranks?

Skills that are higher than characteristics, or vice-versa are just green dice. To upgrade, I'd suggest pricing droid parts at something similar to cybernetic enhancements' costs.

It might be useful to read the section of the rulebook on Skills and the section on Dice Pools--they apply the same whether it's a droid or a sentient type of character.

You take the two numbers--the characteristic and the skill ranks. The higher of the two numbers is the total number of dice rolled, which start as green Ability dice. The lower of the two numbers is the total number of dice which are upgraded, turning green Ability dice to yellow Proficiency dice.

If you've got an Agility of 2 and a Ranged (Light) skill of 4, then you take the higher number, which is 4, and put out 4 green dice. Then for the lower number, which is 2, you trade in 2 of those green dice for 2 yellow dice. This results in a dice pool of 2 Yellow 2 Green.

It works the same if you have an Agility of 4 and a Ranged (Light) skill of 2. The result is the same, 2 Yellow 2 Green.
