Relatively new player: Jedi deck

By See Threebilbo, in Star Wars: The Card Game

Hey,everyone! I'm a relative beginner (have had the game for over a year but almost no chances to play it). I'm forced to practice by playing against myself. As you might expect, I'm not exactly a whiz at the moment, but I do love the game!

Anyway, the Jedi are my favorite affiliation, and I thought I would post the deck I've built and am currently testing. Comments and suggestions would be very, very welcome.

2x A Hero's Journey

2x In You Must Go

2x The Secret of Yavin 4

1x Watchers in the Wasteland

1x Forgotten Heroes

1x Self-Preservation

1x A Message From Beyond

Like lots of Jedi decks, I start with a strong core of Luke, Yoda, and the Guardians set. This gives me resources, cheapens my enhancements (love those Lightsabers!) and a lot of protection and cancel options a la Lightsaber Deflection, Guardians, and Counter-Stroke.

As you can see, the rest of the deck could probably use some focus. I love having the Force as the Light Side player, as Jedi seem to lack solid black objective damage. With this goal in mind, I've included Self-Preservation. Soresu Training is fantastic on Yoda, in my experience; it makes him more durable, and I feel more comfortable having him in engagements (he's usually just a placeholder for the Force). The objective itself is great and really helps with Force struggles. The Gotal Outcasts are nice, but I have had a few moments when they just kind of...sit there if the Dark Side takes the Force away from me. Unwavering Resolve is great.

Watchers in the Wasteland is working out very, very well. I'm never unhappy to see any of the cards in this set. The new Obi-Wan is wonderful (Wanderful?), and I've been fortunate enough to discard Yoda for the edge and get him back again with Obi-Wan's ability several times. Plus, Shistavanen are my favorite alien species! They're great, since I really hate edge battles. Force Cleansing is nice, but sometimes it's hard to decide what to attach it to.

Forgotten Heroes is here because it gives me another Obi-Wan, Jedi Mind Trick, and card drawing.

A Message From Beyond is here for Old Ben's Spirit. I rarely have occasion to use either Calm or Weapon Mastery, though they're handy in a pinch.

As for where I want to go with this, I'd like to stick to a pure Jedi affiliation if possible. I used to have a Jedi Training in here instead of Forgotten Heroes, since I like having the objective out, as well as the Ancient Monument. However, the units in the set just aren't that great, and I thought having a bigger one like Obi-Wan and keeping a Jedi Mind Trick would be better. I'm considering adding in a Knowledge and Defense and taking out A Message From Beyond in order to get more Force User units for card drawing with Forgotten Heroes and some healing.

I apologize for the long post! I'm excited to finally be a part of the community here. Any help you guys could give me on the deck would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the community! :D

I am a fan of single Affiliation decks as well. A Hero's Journey and The Secret of Yavin 4 are to me, must haves in Jedi decks (at least until the next Cycle of expansions). I agree with only having one copy of A Message from Beyond in your deck, seeing as the rest of the cards besides the Old Ben's Spirits will end up being used in edge battles and the Objective itself isn't super useful. I don't have any experience with Watchers in the Wasteland as I don't have Balance of the Force yet so I can't comment much on that.

What I think you may come across, which is often a common thing with Jedi and playing the Light Side in general, is that you don't always have the Resources you need to play out your Units. Even just getting an Obi-Wan Kenobi into play costs 5 Resources, meaning you either had to start with an Affiliation that provides 2 Resources or hope you draw one of your four copies of Jedi Training Grounds. Otherwise, Obi-Wan is a sitting duck in your deck and is relegated to winning the next Edge Battle. That can be handy to have for the Edge but sometimes you need that Unit in play.

Because of the resource-limited nature of the Light Side, my current Jedi deck has several 2 resource Objectives in it. That gives my deck that much of a higher chance to starting with more than 4 Resources, rather than hoping to pull one of your Hero's Journeys and some Jedi Training Grounds.

For reference my deck is this:

2x A Hero's Journey

2x Forgotten Heroes

2x The Secret of Yavin 4

2x A Journey to Dagobah

1x A Message from Beyond

1x Self Preservation

4/10 Objective Sets have 2 Resources and 4/50 cards provide a Resource (2 of them being R2-D2) compared to having

2/10 Objective Sets with 2 Resources and 4/50 cards

Also, with most Objective Sets being in there twice, I will see more of a consistent deck of what I want to pull and 2x Forgotten Heroes means I'm gonna have a little higher chance of pulling that Objective from the start. Trust me, with the amount of Force Users in my deck it would be a shame not to have that Objective in play.

Hey man, have you tried playing on OCTGN? It's not exactly the same as playing face-to-face, but it's pretty close.People are pretty friendly on there and will help newbies along too. Give it a shot!

Nah.

Thanks for the welcome and advice, everyone. Let me see if I can respond in a somewhat orderly fashion.

Thanks for the decklist, GG. I agree that resources are a problem...the only thing is, I'm very leery of having four four-health objectives in my deck. Sure, since I'm playing Jedi I'm likely to have decent defensive capabilities, but it seems a little risky to me. What's your experience been like? Also, I do think having two Forgotten Heroes would be great. I'll have to give the whole thing some more thought. Besides, I really like having Yoda and the enhancement-helping his objective gives. I've got to mull over it, though.

I've thought about joining OCTGN, yes, but I'm nervous. I know practicing is the only way to get better, but I'm still a little shy. X3 Hopefully I'll be able to get over that worry and join sometime soon, though!

I agree it leaves you a bit more vulnerable with four 4-Damage Capacity Objectives. It depends on how you want your deck to play and what you think you will come up against more often.

I am the only person I know that has cards for the game so I try to keep my decks all mono-Affiliation. I've tried mixing them but don't enjoy it as much. Most of the people I play this with are family and friends that don't have the game themselves.

I have only played 1 other person who owns the game at my FLGS once and my Imperial Navy Deck went complete overkill on Blast Damage on the last turn of our match. I may be getting together with some new ones interested in getting the game so I can teach them. If they get it then I will have a competitive rival :D :D :D

Just figured I should inform you my advice is not based upon my experience in any competitive field or anything, just what I feel has better synergy and consistency.

No, no, it's fine! I appreciate the advice. I've only ever played with family/friends, too. About six games total, alas.

Also, I just made an OCTGN account (yay!), but I'm close to computer-illiterate, so I'm having a lot of trouble...I need to make a feed to install Star Wars, yes? But how do I do that, and what would the URL be to put in? Argh! XD

I feel if you are intent on playing a mono-Jedi deck you've out together as good a deck as you are going to be capable of in the current card pool.

You are heavily reliant on a few units to do the majority of your objective damage. You have to play fairly conservatively for the most part because of this.

Thanks for the warning. I know I don't have a lot of really damaging units, and it scares me, frankly. I'm hoping that the new Force Packs in the coming months can help me with this. I don't play competitively yet, and I'm not sure if I will, but I do want to play well, and I have noticed how few Jedi decks (and cards, really) seem to be getting played. Ah, well, I'll just have to keep on trying!

There are a couple of good tricks to deal with lack of big damage units when playing LS:

1. Be good at holding the balance of the force. Even if you don't hold it long enough to get the free damage, holding it long enough to slow down the Death Star dial and thus doubling the amount of time you have to deal your damage.

2. Use your tactics weenies effectively (units like the Twi'lek Loyalist). They can clear the way for your otherwise non-threatening units to get some damage through, especially early in the game when you're still looking for a big unit.

I won a game at a regional tournament last year where the only blast damage I ever got on table was Han and a Guardian of the Peace holding a Jedi Lightsaber. It wasn't an easy game, but those little pings add up eventually.

Thanks! The Force is pretty easy for this deck to grab, fortunately. I like the Loyalists, too; they're a fun trick. Congrats on the win. That sounds hard-earned.

This is a tangent, but you're one of the guys over at Top Tier Gaming, yes? You guys have a great site.

Yep, I'm red5ccg over there. Glad you like the site! I'm also the Matt on the Table Flip podcast.

(In general, I use red5ccg any site that I registered specifically for Star Wars. But there are a couple of sites - this one and cardgamedb - that I registered at before the Star Wars stuff was released so I used my default generic username).

Cool! I'm strongly considering registering over there, so maybe I'll see you there, too.

Anyway, I now have OCTGN and have sorta figured out how it all works, so I'm planning on loading up this deck and giving it a whirl sometime later today. I hope it goes OK!

I'm still not quite sure what to take out if I want another Forgotten Heroes, but I'm leaning on Watchers, if only for the fact that three 5-cost unique units doesn't sound so great. I do love the new Ben, though...

Hey Threebilbo, feel free to ping me on OCTGN if you need any help whats your user name on OCTGN?

Same user name as here for me.

Edited by KennedyHawk

The same one as on here, but without the space (they don't allow it, darnit). How about you? Thank you so much for the offer. Very much appreciated. Hopefully we can play soon!

I'm red5ccg over on OCTGN, hit me up for a game sometime.

Thank you both! I'll try to get on in the evenings. I wish OCTGN gave me more alerts because I missed KennedyHawk's invite to a game last night. Sorry! XD

Apologies for double posting, but I toggled some objective sets and decided to put in A Journey to Dagobah for the resources and Red 5 objective damage. I took out A Message From Beyond. Only played a teensy bit with it so far. I hadn't touched Double Strike since I took apart the Core Jedi deck from the rule book...I'd forgotten how fun it can be.

Yeah... just imagine the combo of double strike and trust your feelings on Luke Skywalker. Total annihilation.

Having manage Bamboozle with Trust Your Feelings on Luke before, it is indeed total annihilation (think of Bamboozle as a slightly better Double Strike).

Hey, forgot to thank you personally for the advice. I'm still learning the ropes of the interface, but I'd love to play a game sometime, if that's OK. What's your name over there?

So were I playing in a Store Championship, I would be playing this pure Jedi deck:

2x Hero's Journey

2x In You Must Go

1x Forgotten Heroes

1x Watchers in the Wasteland

1x Secret of Yavin 4

1x Self Preservation

1x Jedi Training

1x Rescue in the Clouds

This deck is by far my favorite Jedi deck. It is great at managing the Force Struggle and can really abuse many of the neat cards in the deck like Jedi Mind Trick, It Binds All Things, the Wolfmen and Return of the Jedi. The real superstar in the deck is the New Obi: I so wish the new and old Obis were switched as it would have made Jedi so much better.

Anyways, enjoy the decklist!

I'm glad to see Last-Minute Rescue get some love. I love healing as a flavor theme for the Jedi and as something good to have on hand, as pure common sense in my view. The only thing that scares me about the set is that its cards are all a bit on the expensive side, though RotJ would definitely play into the mini recursion theme I've got going. And yeah, the new Obi is amazing. Thank you for the ideas.

No sweat, dude. My name on OCTGN is the same as on here. Don't worry about being new on OCTGN, it's not Magic so you'll run into way less mouth-breathers on there taking it super seriously (Keyword is "less". There are a couple, haha). Hit me up anytime you see me on there and we'll have some games.
