So about a year ago I went to Card Kingdom in Seattle. I hadn't been into cards since the few sets of WoW and I wanted to find a new semi-competitive game. Then I saw the X-Wing Miniatures games and bought a starter immediately. I used to be big into the old Star Wars CCG by Decipher and my favorite part of it was the ship combat. I would make whole decks out of nothing but starships and play "space only" games with my friends (a game type I wish had been embraced at some tournament level but never was). Add to the fact as a kid I loved the Star Wars Micro Machines and so to me, this game is perfect.
I was told a group of players met there on Thursdays so I came back a few days later and they were all nice enough to let me watch a few games to learn it and then they let me play a quick 4 players game with the then just-released Falcon.
I knew at that moment what I wanted to see.
The Millennium Falcon vs. Serenity.
I went home that night and with my basic understanding of the game outlined an idea. The bulk of which has survived to this (maybe) final build. I knew I wanted certain things. 9 characters, a unique way to deal damage since she ain't got no guns. I also really wanted to build the cards around the characters, not just some random mechanics slapped together with a name and picture. For some this was easy. Kaylee is the same today as the first night I outlined all the cards. Same with Book. Mal is almost the same, only his power was on a pilot card originally but I have since simplified that all down to just having Wash as the pilot.
So my plan was to keep going every week and flesh out it all out. But literally the next day my work schedule changed and I have been busy every Thursday night since. But I have tried to keep up with new ships as they have come out and have bought some here and there (I have always loved B-wings).
So after some tinkering and play testing against myself I think I finally have it right.
So first I knew that this should be a closed set. Cards from Serenity can't be used with other ships and vice versa. With this closed system I had a lot more freedom to do what I wanted without worrying about how other cards could combine with them.
I also wanted each character to have their own full sized upgrade card. I did this for two reasons. 1. I hate the tiny cards. Hate them. If you like em, cool. Everyone has their own style. But for 15 years cards for me as significant as upgrades and weapons didn't get downsized to secondary status (I like the damage deck using them though). And 2. They're Big **** Heroes so they get big **** cards.
This is what I ended up with after about a year of tinkering, starting over after losing all the card files, and general game testing.

All the cards and tokens and custom damage deck above can be found here http://imgur.com/a/aMnXs/
I hope to bring her to Card Kingdom or any Seattle area game shop to do more testing and get her just right. I fully admit I only have maybe three full games of playing against someone else and since are a few grammatical errors I need to fix anyways I don't yet want to call this a final build. I would love suggestions or ideas or perhaps if there are better ways to word certain cards to fit in with the game.
That being said, you ever sail in a Firefly before?
