I added Serenity to the game.

By Reynolds Vs Solo, in X-Wing

So about a year ago I went to Card Kingdom in Seattle. I hadn't been into cards since the few sets of WoW and I wanted to find a new semi-competitive game. Then I saw the X-Wing Miniatures games and bought a starter immediately. I used to be big into the old Star Wars CCG by Decipher and my favorite part of it was the ship combat. I would make whole decks out of nothing but starships and play "space only" games with my friends (a game type I wish had been embraced at some tournament level but never was). Add to the fact as a kid I loved the Star Wars Micro Machines and so to me, this game is perfect.

I was told a group of players met there on Thursdays so I came back a few days later and they were all nice enough to let me watch a few games to learn it and then they let me play a quick 4 players game with the then just-released Falcon.

I knew at that moment what I wanted to see.

The Millennium Falcon vs. Serenity.

I went home that night and with my basic understanding of the game outlined an idea. The bulk of which has survived to this (maybe) final build. I knew I wanted certain things. 9 characters, a unique way to deal damage since she ain't got no guns. I also really wanted to build the cards around the characters, not just some random mechanics slapped together with a name and picture. For some this was easy. Kaylee is the same today as the first night I outlined all the cards. Same with Book. Mal is almost the same, only his power was on a pilot card originally but I have since simplified that all down to just having Wash as the pilot.

So my plan was to keep going every week and flesh out it all out. But literally the next day my work schedule changed and I have been busy every Thursday night since. But I have tried to keep up with new ships as they have come out and have bought some here and there (I have always loved B-wings).

So after some tinkering and play testing against myself I think I finally have it right.

So first I knew that this should be a closed set. Cards from Serenity can't be used with other ships and vice versa. With this closed system I had a lot more freedom to do what I wanted without worrying about how other cards could combine with them.

I also wanted each character to have their own full sized upgrade card. I did this for two reasons. 1. I hate the tiny cards. Hate them. If you like em, cool. Everyone has their own style. But for 15 years cards for me as significant as upgrades and weapons didn't get downsized to secondary status (I like the damage deck using them though). And 2. They're Big **** Heroes so they get big **** cards.

This is what I ended up with after about a year of tinkering, starting over after losing all the card files, and general game testing.

I hope to bring her to Card Kingdom or any Seattle area game shop to do more testing and get her just right. I fully admit I only have maybe three full games of playing against someone else and since are a few grammatical errors I need to fix anyways I don't yet want to call this a final build. I would love suggestions or ideas or perhaps if there are better ways to word certain cards to fit in with the game.

That being said, you ever sail in a Firefly before?

I certainly commend you on your enthusiasm for Serenity. I have only seen the movie but I think your cards look awesome. Now you need some reavers to battle!

Well, ****. I was in the Seattle area just this last weekend and would have loved to have seen this in person. Alas, you posted this a few days too late. :(

BTW, cool stuff.

Seems pretty neato. Scaling is a bit off there but I like seeing Firefly-Class Transports no matter the form. :D

Yeah she's 1:400 not 1:270 but that's the nearest commercially made model scale there is.

The material is great. The mechanics and points are quite off, though.

The only attack you have is a secondary weapon. Prone to critical hits.

I like your idea to add to the damage deck, washing out the regular critical results. But the effectiveness of that is questionable, you might not draw a single one of those special/added cards.

Some of the characters are way to strong while others are too weak with costing too many points. The one dude that does exactly the same effect as saboteur, only for a lot more points and only on critical result (12.5%, so only once every 8th turn) - just for example.

You did a good job on the artwork and you tried to catch the feel of flying the firefly, but from the rules/mechanics aspect the whole thing is not going to work in X-Wing. With only 5 hull points it will break apart pretty fast (3 attacks maybe - what happens with the Serentiy title when characters leave play, is the "hull upgrade" staying?). The use of the only weapon is overly complicated, this definitely is not a ship for combat (and X Wing is all about combat), and 40 points is far too much (just look at the shuttle to get an idea).

what dial are you using? an existing one, or a new one? (Probably a new one, with a 5 forward for a large ship)

I would say the 5 straight is a special move granted by the card effect, and no 5 move on the dial.. just a thought

Cool idea, playtest it and see what people think.. looks like fun

The 14 card damage deck isn't an addition, you only use those damage cards.

The points are like Who's Line it Anyways, meaningless. The only reason Jayne's a 7 is because it counts down from 9-1 based essentially on the rank of the character on the ship. Individually their cost is irrelevant because they're designed to just be used as a 100 point set.

With only 5 hull points it will break apart pretty fast (3 attacks maybe - what happens with the Serentiy title when characters leave play, is the "hull upgrade" staying?).

You get 14 hull to start the game. 5 base and +9 for the characters. If you lose a character due to a critical hit you also lose a hull. But Kaylee and Simon can repair or bring back characters to add some longevity to her.

Well, no it's not. It's a weaponless transport.

Same as a Lambda Shuttle.

Shiny

you might be right, the best way to do it.

Suggestions on wording (without regards toward the point cost of the card in question):

ZOE: add "apply all results". If that was the intention anyways it needs to be there, if it wasn't it should be as some effects are hard to generate and you will that extra luck.

MALCOLM: Should be activated when attacked, not when dealt damage; there's only so much damage that you can take, so the card effect is limited to something like 3 successful uses; while rolling when attacked you might get away with good defensive roll and still strike back (also, would better fit the caption "Someone ever TRIES to kill you...")

WASH: should be reworded that the ship gains the listed actions added to its action bar

KAYLEE: does the ship gain stress tokens and ignore them, or does it not get them? Rewording necessary for clarity

RIVER: limit the condition to predicting the correct amount of 1 kind of result, like "if you correctly predict number of hits" or "number of blanks". I would say you go for eyeballs here, have her predict the number of eyeballs (shown on both die type) to activate her effect. If you want to keep it the way it is (completely predicting correct) then upgrade her effect from reroll to negating opponents results.

INARA: reword to get it in line with Vaders ability (with 3 instead of 2)

SERENITY: Why is the agility linked to the firepower of the opponent? I don't understand, so I can't give suggestions

FULL BURN: reword to get the 5 move in line with the ion effect (next turn no dial, move 5 red, skip attack)

CRY BABY: reword to get it in line with Biggs ability. Add a distance for Serentiy where the CB effect work (within range 3 probably) - it makes no sense that the enemy have to attack the CB while Serenity is at the other side of the table.

Make CB immun to target lock and focused fire - that might still not be enough to make it a useful piece of equipment, unless you may carry more than 1 CB.

Pretty cool seeing her on the table. I have the same model, I was thinking of running her as an alt Rebel Transport when the rules come out.

Looks great...eventhough serenity had no weapons...also for a cheap build those of us that have firefly the boardgame can use one of its minis

Nice work! I've been wanting to add a Firefly ship for use as a generic freighter but haven't found a model I liked yet.

Nice idea! It's a little too big but still workable.

Looks really great, and i love the series and movie.

But some guys here will scream blasphemy for integrating it into the SW universe XD

You need "Aiming To Misbehave" and "Big **** Heroes" EPT's. I don't even care what they do, just that they're there.

You win the internet,

I joined this forum just to comment on how freaking AWESOME this is! You sir are my Big **** Hero. Joss would be proud.

Please keep us updated on any changes/tweaks you make as you get to play this more. I will be adding this to my collection ASAP.

Nice work. This is a very cool project. May I recommend a turret upgrade option based on the modifications made by the crew in Serenity? There is no flak38 upgrade card, but that's not to say that you couldn't make one!

I love this so gorram much. I think a "Vera" card would also be pretty cool, based off Our Mrs. Reynolds when he uses it to shoot the space station. I know you want an even hundred points but I think some options with the non-character upgrades might be nice. Given the advantage attck has over defense anyway I think making defense match attack instead of attack -1 might be good too.

But either way. I salute you sir. Can't take the sky from me!

GObs of versions on Shapeways - not sure about sizes.

Something I just realized. at range one the Serenity would technically be able to attack, granted with only one die.

Also by the rules Wash can't crew a ship piloted by himself.
