Varied Releases: Even it out FFG..!

By KCDodger, in X-Wing

All ships are created equal.

But some ships are created more equal than others.

TIE Interceptor. X-Wing. TIE Fighter. All three of these have two different releases. The former two in the starter kit and their own expansions- the third for the X-Wing, with a rebel transport. The TIE Interceptor, its expansion and of course, the Imperial Aces pack.

And guess what? People flock to buying the expansions of each ship because it offers new gameplay treats and something different... So...

Why not do it with the rest?

Release new Y-Wings, A-Wings, TIE Bombers, HWK-290s, TIE Advanced(s?), perhaps even a B-Wing one. Because why not? Offers new gameplay.

And hey, paint 'em different. Some of us don't like painting our miniatures (I enjoy it though!) and want alternates. Gives even more incentive to buy.

But why do I propose this? It's not good to see some ships get better treatment than others. It ensures absolutely, that certain ships will be dominant in tourneys. I mean the numbers speak for themselves. X-Wings, TIEs, it's what we have the most of, and the most variety with, because of the fact that they're not only good ships but they're good ships with options.

So why not give the rest that treatment?

It's no the first time anyone has said it; but I would love to see at least a pilot card upgrade pack featuring more cards for existing ships. My Y-Wing's are crying for a few more characters!

Yep, more pilot cards are what some ships really needs.

A pilot upgrade pack with 1 or 2 new pilots for all currently released ships would be an instant buy for me.

This game is not that old, we will have 18(?) ships, 20(?) different ship expansions/core sets, by the end if the year, X-Wings 2nd year. I think that's good. FFG will release new expansions for every ship in time, but they want to keep the balance of the game, so rushing more expansions may hurt the game in the long run.

You realize that you're basically asking FFG to do what FFG has started to do? I love how everyone points out how the interceptor has two releases, why doesn't the Y wing? When Imp Aces hasn't even hit the shelves yet. I would be completely surprised if they didn't have a Rebel Aces pack in the works for Y and/or A wing. It just makes good business sense.

As for the X and TIE fighter expansions, they were offered as a way to expand your core set from the very beginning of the game. Given, people still bought 2 core sets, but I'm sure lots of people would have been upset if that was the only way to get an X wing.

It'll happen, don't worry. Give FFG time to, you know... design the components... and make sure that everything continues being well balanced.

I'm sure they will. It makes sense to do.

I'm simply tossing the topic out there to discuss. :P

I would say this is unlikely to happen as a card pack unaccompanied by repainted minis.

An interesting question would then be what would we want in a "Rebel Aces" expansion? A-Wings? A-wing and a B-wing? Feels like there are enough boxes with X-Wings already, but there could always be some kind of "Rogue Squadron" set. Thoughts?

Well, it'd most likely be X-Wings, but As and Ys need some lovin' bad.

All movie ships should get an Aces like pack. And I'm sure they will. You just have to be patient, as they have just now started to diversify the line.

The general opinion is a Y/A pack, with one of each.

I'm not inclined to think either of them is particularly weak right now, they're both just underutilized. Although the Y wing could use something that would help differentiate it from the HWK. Both Dutch and Salm are very good at what they do, and Salm will start seeing more play time as soon as better torps come into play (I'm looking at you flechette!). Dutch already sees some play time. But there seems to be no reason to take a Gray anymore, seeing as Roark is the same PS, 1 point cheaper, has a kick $#@ ability, is pretty much just as survivable, and only lacks the 3 turn and 4k, which isn't particularly useful on a turret ship anyways.

The A wing shines with the generics. The Green is the only EPT capable generic the rebels have, while the Prototype is the cheapest (I don't count a naked HWK) and is the only small base PS1 the rebels have. However, the named pilots suffer. Arvel suffers from his lack of EPT (really, green leader doesn't have one while green squadron pilots do? what gives?) as well as his high PS, it makes it such that it's better to take a GSP w/ VI for 20 points instead of Arvel at 23, for basically 1 PS difference. Tycho, while his ability is great as a generic ability, kinda sucks on the A wing. The A wing is so verse at clearing stress that his ability really doesn't mean anything. Tycho on any other ship would be amazing though.

So, basically, I would like to see a reason to start yield Y wing generics, which would likely come from turret options or torpedoes. And I would like to see some more named pilots for the A wing. That's one of the things that sucks about the rebel side, we only get 4 pilots per release, whereas the empire gets 6 pilots (exception being the large bases).

Well, it'd most likely be X-Wings, but As and Ys need some lovin' bad.

X-Wing's are already getting more pilots with the Rebel Transport pack. It also has the most named pilots of any rebel ship, and now will have the most by a even bigger margin. In fact it will now have as many named pilots as the Tie Fighter I believe. With both having 6.

So I can't see them putting out a Rebel Aces pack with X-Wings.

Also A's and Y's do not need lovin', they work just fine as they are. Just people don't seem to know how to use them properly so they get a bad rap.

Both could use some tweaks but they are not in need of being fixed by any means.

8 actually. More than any other pilot in general. TIE/ln has 6, TIE/in will have 6, TIE/x1 has 4, TIE/sa has 2, FS has 3, Lambda has 3...

X wing will have 8 (2 from core, 2 from exp, 4 from transport), Y has 2, A has 2, B has 2, YT has 3, HWK has 3.

Go go X wing! I guess they named the game properly :)

4 from transport

I knew they were getting at least 2, couldn't remember how many though so I figured it would at least put the X-Wing on par with the Tie Fighter at 6.

That many named pilots makes sense. Since the X-Wing is by and large the "main character" in terms of star fighters in Star Wars.

I hope they get those X-Wing pilots out there as a non-transport option. Making them only available in a 60$ purchase that can't be used in regular games would be kind of a jerk move.

I appreciate that they don't go hog wild with the reprints yet, as it renders a lot of the 'numbers purchases' superfluous. I just got my 3rd A-Wing, but have been passing on more Interceptors knowing I'll have more than I could ever use after Aces. I don't need more than 3 B-Wings, which I already have, and if I have to re-buy Bombers one day I'm going to regret the 3 I already own.

Don't worry, I'm sure Ebay will satisfy your ever needs. There'll be plenty of people (myself included more than likely) buying more than 1 transport. And in that case, if I can sell the X wing mini+cards for the $10 going rate, that means the transport only costed me $30... not too bad.

I hope they get those X-Wing pilots out there as a non-transport option.

No they're completely legal to be used in the normal dog fighting game. But that's not a jerk move, that's just simple marketing. They're offering something to sweeten the deal for those who are considering getting it but aren't sure.

It also increases the value of the package for those like me who would of gotten it even if didn't have the X-Wing an pilots in it.

It's not like the pilots will be so OP'ed that you can't be competitive without them, and for friendly games you can just print them out...

The only ship i see needing love is TIE advance. Come out with a ship upgrade card to increase primary weapon damage by 1.
