Incorporating Slicer Challenges into "Beyond the Rim"

By AmazonChique, in Game Masters

I'm putting together my first Edge of the Empire game, and decided to start out running Beyond the Rim. One of my players would like to play a slicer, and while I can work that background in, I'm struggling to find ways to make a slicer's focus feel relevant on the treasure hunt.

I would appreciate any suggestions from other gamemasters who've run read this or run a few slicers.

Let's see, slicing we used in our game for that: (SPOILERS)

  • We sliced the data pod for more information about the location. It gave a boost die for astrogation I think. He also pulled a holo message about the deal the captain had.
  • We sliced the stations system to track a particular droid that attempted some skulldudgery on our ship.
  • We sliced Reoms security feed to find out who tossed the office.
  • The slicer manned the sensors to locate the crash sites. He used computers for that.
  • We sliced the escape pod for more telemetry data to locate the main crash site.
  • We sliced the bridge and pulled a holo recording of the crash and learned that the captain and Dr survived.
  • The slicer used his skills to conduct some EM warfare on the tie fighters using "Slice Enemy Systems"

I don't know how much of this was the GM improvising, but if it was, we couldn't tell.

Having GMed Beyond the Rim I can say that most of what Ahrimon said are situations in the adventure where someone with the Computers skill can be very useful. There's also several instances at the end of part three, when the players are helping to repair Reom's ship where Computers become useful.

That being said, not every adventure is going to have an equal number of opportunities for every concievable character to shine. I felt BtR did a great job of making everyone feel useful, but every adventure can't contain everything.

I appreciate the input. This will be our first adventure, and the first time most of the people in this group play together, so I wanted to make sure everyone feels useful and has fun.

It sounds like there will be some good computer opportunities, and when things get boring the system makes it very easy to improvise.

Any suggestions for the player who wants to be an archeologist? The adventure mentions they were re-discovering old republic technology, so that seems like a good hook for her.

Encourage the player (and the rest of the party) playing the slicer to come up with clever ideas for using his hacking. Thats part of the fun of being a slicer. Whatever he can think of attemping when there is a terminal around, he can try it. Star Wars is only limited by your own imagination.

the players in my group had a fusion lantern and they used it to power up some systems in the various wreck. for us it was simply a door to an armoury. no reason you couldn't have it be a computer console full of awesome data

I think for the Archaeologist they should have an exceptional time role playing Beyond the Rim. First there is a new remote planet to discover, Cholganna, explore and learn all about. And then there is the history and legend of the Sa Nalaor.

The Archaeologist will shine in Episode I when the crew can gather information through investigation and there are several Knowledge checks that can be made to uncover information about Cholganna and Raxus Prime. Also with her ranks in Knowledge she should be able to find some creative ways to use them to avoid ambushes or to find the crash sites in Episode II. Athletics are also a big part of exploring the planet as well.

All told, I think the Archaeologist will have a great time. Sounds like you have some pretty cool PCs for this adventure, what are the careers of the rest of your team?
