If you play a game with two expansion boards (say Arkham + Dunwich + Innsmouth) with only three players, do you then require only 1 gate trophy to win by closing all of the gates? 3 players - 2 expansions boards = theoretical 1 player, which means you would only require 1 gate trophy, correct? I assume the rule applies here as it seems to apply to all aspects of the game that use the total # of players as part of a calculation, with the exception of the Final Battle.
2 EBs, 3 Players, Only 1 Gate Trophy?
I suggest you reread the rules for using multiple expansion boards. It's count as -1 investigator per expansion board beyond the first. So to do what you suggest, you would have to play with all 3 expansion boards.
However, with that said, your logic is correct. 3 players + 3 expansion boards = 1 gate trophy required to win by closing all open gates.
Ah! Thanks. I rarely play with more than two expansion boards. Obviously, "beyond the first" managed to slip by me in my recollection of the rule. Cheers.
Sorry to double post and bring this topic back to the top, but a related question occurred to me last night:
Does the "-1 per EB beyond the first" rule also apply to the 5+ players/two monsters per gate difficulty increase? With two expansion boards in play, would you actually need 6 players before doubling the monsters from each new gate?
that's right. For everything except final combat.
Cheers. We actually played half of last night's 5-player game correct, prior to wondering out loud whether the expansion board rule actually applied to the increased difficulty. After a short, spirited discussion, we still weren't sure, so we played the last half with two monsters per gate. Oh well, GOOD TIMES. We were pretty tooled up by then, and glad for more trophies to banish Bokrug's **** Beings of Ib.
