need deck help.

By Guardian of the Night, in 4. AGoT Deck Construction

Hey all.
Our northern Kentucky meta is on a slow but steady comeback since our layoff right before LCG.
And as I have been trying to recruit new players I have been trying to build a deck for each house that is relatively decent or at least comparable to everything else in our meta.

But for those who have been around long enough to know me...would know that I am a Baratheon through and through. I have built some other houses but have never really dabbled enough to be extra competitive with them.

So here is the point of the thread...

I need help.

I want to build a deck for each house so that I may let new players see what house they want to play from the get go.

I know sometimes its a sense of pride that you don't want your deck copied (and i understand) or whatnot but if there are those who wouldn’t mind helping me with a deck list or two to get some new players into the game it would greatly help me out.
If you would rather PM me with some help, that would be great as well.

thank you,

Guardian

Hi!

I don't know what cards you own, and It'd be a great help to suggest you something useful :)

Let me know what you have and I'll try to help :)

why thank you DB, you seem to be a helpful fellow.

our meta has a large cardpool which makes it nice for these kind of ordeals.

I have 3 core sets, and we buy at least 3 of every chapter pack.

and if i don't have the cards needed, i will get them, our local comic shop keeps us stocked.

thank you in advance.

Ok, let's try it... :)

What I'll try to do, now, is to give you some basic lists to give an interpretation of the actual/general meta, in order to play different strategies and taste the flavour of each house.

STARK

I'd focus on basic Winter here.

We can do something great with Shadows too, but for a couple of reasons, I'd prefer to leave shadows to Lannisters.

LANNISTER

This is a Basic SHADOW deck. It's not SIMPLE to play, so, after this, there's ANOTHER list and that's about a "brain devastating mega control ultra kneel" Lanni deck.

This list has never been tested in this particular way, so, I don't know how it is, but the advice is: play only if you know well the game and every kind of oppo. It can be difficult for a new player and can be frustrating.

And here we have a "normal" Ultra kneel deck: not so funny to play (slow and tends to stall), but good to understand Lanni's Core mechanics: gold, insane card advantage, kneel.

A couple of Hints about this one: it has a weird pool of plot, pretty conditional. I.E., I use A Time For Ravens just AGAINST seasons, to get the Carrions and Building season to get "Lion's Gate/GoaldRoad/other stuff depending on the oppo.

Then, it has LOTS of events to give some "twisting turns" to each game.

This deck has been HARD TESTED and won lots of games. Some troubles against Greys/Winter.

Here it is. :)

In the next episode: TARGS!

Here we have a Targ Experiment. It's not so simple to play, but I guess it's a good start to understand the potential of this family.

It's not SOLID for high tournament level (yet :) ) but you have lots of nice interaction, stuff moving on and on in the circle table/hand/discard pile and different ways to get rid of different enemies.

It has good icon balancing and some "surprises". There are turns in which you play "alone", cause some "steps" need lot of effort and thinkin'...

Very funny, but if you make a mistake, it's over, cause EACH turn you have to use "full power" in order to use EVERY SINGLE gold/influence you can use.

It did pretty well in Multiplayer, maybe better than in Joust.

Here's the list.

About Greys: Just copy the World Champion's deck. I DON'T LIKE the NETDECKING (it wastes the biggest reason why I like Card Games: deckbuilding), but in this case you need a "ready to play" deck, so that's it: Grey/Winter deck. Great archetype to learn them and to test other decks.

:)

Obviously, nothing about Martel. I did something, but I suggest you to wait PotS, that's hopefully coming :)

If I understood, you don't need any advice about Bara...And that would be good 'cause I haven't find anything "good" (to me) in them, even if I do TRUST in Bara's power.

If you can HELP me, it'd be wonderful...I like this "House lore/wisdom" exchange :)

Tell me if you need other stuff or if you want to discuss these list. I'm happy to do it (deckbuilding section is not that "crowded" nowadays) :)

you are the man.

I will give this a try at my next leisure.

thank you sooo much.

Let me know. It helps me too. I can't play that much, so...

:)

And a note for the STARK DECK: pull out Direwolf Pup and put in 3x Narrow Sea. :)

Hi DB_Cooper (and everyone else)!

This is a really useful thread for us newbies. AGoT seems to be a very good game and luckily the community is great! I'm new to this game and have just played four games with the Lannister and Targ decks from the Core set vs a player with a far better deck built with CCG cards. My Lanni game was a disaster but I got three wins with the Targ deck - maybe it was a good match-up and a lot of luck involved but I enjoyed Targ immensely.

I have the same need as Guardian but my card pool is much more limited. Help with full decks for the four houses in the Core set would be very useful and/or possible combos to build my own decks around. So far I got the following sets:

Core set x2 and one of the following CPs: Ancient Enemies, Sacred Bonds, The Battle of Ruby Ford, The War of Five Kings and Refugees of War.

I would really like to play Targ Ambush as well as a Lanni deck with good draw and deck manipulation. I don't now anything about Stark and Baratheon but would like to try them to get a feeling of their strengths and weaknesses.

We just play casual so both "fun" and competetive decks are of interest. The use of any banned cards (if there are any) is OK to use.

Cheers

Fierce

Edit: Advice on which CP:s to buy next from my card pool's point of view would be much appreciated.

Hi!

I'm a noob too, mate :) I don't wanna be a "deckbuilder" professor, but I try to give some advices to "newer" players. ;)

Anyway...Just to start:

- Targ Ambush is not that playable...I'll make a simple list to understand Targ's attitudes...I'll try to give you a couple of hints about them and Lanni, as you asked...

Attachment control (both offensive and defensive), some recursion and strong chars. Not so quick, but efficient :)

Remember that I'm creating these list with cards you have and try to balance them "in my mind"...I'm not responsible for any blow out you might face ;)

About CPs...I'll write down a little "overall spoiler", just to give you an idea of each single CP I suggest:

I do really like the two "Seasons" packs: Winds of Winter and Song of Summer . They give you the great seasonal play and some good cards.

City of Secrets is a good CP, with different, useful cards: Arya Stark and Hungry Mob for Stark, Kingswood Trail (good for bara) and a bunch of other Shadow Cards to build up the Shadow Lanni Build (there's the funny City of Shadows Agend).

Time of Trials gives you a good amount of Shadow cards, but the most important cards are Condemned By the Council (wonderful location removal) and 3x Gold Cloaks (wonderful if you're going Lanni).

Tales from the Red Keep gives you 3x of the mighty Daemon Blackfyre (war crest to all Targaryen Chars), shadow Syrio Forel and The Red Keep (good for Targ/Martell influence decks). There are the nice Queen of Thorns, Maergery Tyrell and The Black cells, wonderful for Bara/shadow decks. Obviously, there are a couple of cards for Lanni (this cycle is pretty "addressed").

Secrets and Spies has a bunch of good cards: Qyburn, Varys and Small Council Chambers.

Hope it helps! Let me know!

DB

Thx, this will be a massive help! Advice from seasoned players is great!

I really need somewhere to start from and then go on from there. We play next week and I will give your decks a try. I'll probably have some questions for you when I put them together...

Looking forward to your examples of a Bara and Stark deck (no rush though).

Waiting for your questions :)

Now...I won't go "easy rush", but Aggro is a playable concept with the cards you have...

Let's go with "wolves" :)

I've just built this deck and will give it a try. A few questions though:

1. During setup, The Lion Heralds ability doesn't kick in, right (since I'm not really playing him).

2. Which cards are most important to get on the table during setup, the Weaponsmith/Steward (if I have no gold-producing locations in hand) or the Golden Tooth mines (to get some draw right from the start)? Gold vs draw?

3. Head of a Dwarf - I don't really grasp the use of this one. Am I supposed to play it on my own chars in combination with Devious Intentions or play it on my opponents chars? The first option seems a bit risky to me.

4. Are there any (obvious) combos that I should try to pull of?

5. Raff - is he good enough to include? Especially for a newbie who doesn't yet know which cards are good at different situations? Thinking of swapping him for a Qyburn's Informers to get more draw - but maybe QI is a bit overpriced?

6. I'm glancing at Lion's Will - it should fit into the theme of the deck.

This will be great fun.Thanks!

I've just built this deck and will give it a try. A few questions though:

All right...

1. During setup, The Lion Heralds ability doesn't kick in, right (since I'm not really playing him).

No. During set up you're just "placing" cards, not putting them into play or playin' them from your hand. So, no trigger.

2. Which cards are most important to get on the table during setup, the Weaponsmith/Steward (if I have no gold-producing locations in hand) or the Golden Tooth mines (to get some draw right from the start)? Gold vs draw?

It's difficult, but I'll try to go in depth of this question (I'm a lanni player, so gran_risa.gif )...

It depends a lot on your oppo...Card advantage is a great thing, especially if you need different solutions...If you did a great Set Up, I'd put down Golden Tooth mine, cause even if you get back 4/5 cards, you're going to dominate the game (or you're tryn' to do so ;) ).

I'd use gold for a 3/4 cards set up, in order to fasten the deck.

From a "logical" point of view, it would be great a Golden Tooth mine after an awful set up, in order to make "the deck" run faster...But It's not an imperative.

Against a GreyJoy Deck I'd use Gold to get more options...In a mirror match or against a slow deck, I'd use Golden Tooth Mine, to get card advantage.

Hope this reasoning makes a little sense...

3. Head of a Dwarf - I don't really grasp the use of this one. Am I supposed to play it on my own chars in combination with Devious Intentions or play it on my opponents chars? The first option seems a bit risky to me.

You can play it anywhere...But is better to play it on an OPPO's character on a Combo/Control point of view...If you have some killing options (Valar as a plot, you play stark, Targ burn, etc.), let all power go on the Head of a Dwarf's char and then kill it, wasting all power and effort of your opponent.

4. Are there any (obvious) combos that I should try to pull of?

Nope, sorry. :) It's just a control deck...But I can give you some "play" advices:

- kneel something each time you get the chance and overrun you're oppo with Gold and Card advantage, paying lot of attention to mass removal, that can give you lots of troubles...I wouldn't flood the table with lots of Chars but play just 3/4 key chars to stall the game (a couple of Big Guys and a Couple of Weenies), usign Kneel effects and weird events to control...You're oppo will wait a couple of turns befor revealing, let's say, Wildfire Assault and that couple of turns should be a good moment to grab power...

- Just be patient and see what the oppo does...Until you get the chance, go SECOND...try to be first only when you're oppo is likely to reveal a 2 claim plot.

- Make good use of your events: I'm writ you small can change games and Insidious ways can be wasted if you're near or out the "draw cap". Use them when really needed.

- Little note about the SECOND question: Try to get more gold as soon as possible, if you can gain a couple of turns...I wouldn't say that with a deck coming from a complete pool of cards, but in this case, I'd prefer gold to card advantage.

NOTE: those are just GENERAL LANNISTER hints...Someone may say different things, I don't know...I just say what I think is good "in general" as a Lanni player.

5. Raff - is he good enough to include? Especially for a newbie who doesn't yet know which cards are good at different situations? Thinking of swapping him for a Qyburn's Informers to get more draw - but maybe QI is a bit overpriced?

Raff may not seem so good...But it's a low cost char with a nice ability. It's a good way to get "confidence" with the oppo's deck, especially when you have a couple of gold after dominance (it will happen). At the beginning, I used to play QI and I like them too...but I'd go for Raff, right now, cause it helps in keepin' a "soft" cost curve.

6. I'm glancing at Lion's Will - it should fit into the theme of the deck.

I play it in my Ultra kneel lanni deck and it's good, cause it's not conditional...You can put it in for Distraction or, if you want to improve the Kneel effects, pool out 1x Head of a Dwarf and Raff (2 cost) and put them in...

Then, if you wanna follow this way, pull out 1x Lion Herald and 1x Toll Gate and put in "You've killed the wrong dwarf", that's a nice "free" kneel card, with a minor drawback for your deck.

Hope it helps. Here I am, for any other question ;)

switch out head of a Dwarf for flogged and chained. I'd a Toll Gate for a third Sunset Sea. I'd find a way to get Tommen Baratheon in there. I'm also not a big fan of The heralds and vendor of venoms. Also i think you can lose lannisport and maybe a 2nd toll gate and get a few more control events in there, either a 3rd distraction and/or Writ small or 2 killed the wrong dwarfs.

Is it just more or do you only have 59 cards in that deck?

The problem started from the fact that Fierce had a limited pool of cards to choose from (listed above...2x Core set and a bunch of CPs)...I'm not a fan of most of the cards too, but is a good point to start from that pool.

Anyway...You're right, it's 59!!! gran_risa.gif

Actually, I was thinking of adding my second Lannisport to the deck to get that extra power.

One of my opponents is playing a Baratheon deck with Lords so I scrapped the Vendors for a Jhalabar Xho and a Joffrey. Xho's ability to neutralize his renown is nice and with Joffrey's ability I can stick with just one Lannisport.

I got the last Core set available in my country - it's sold out everywhere and it seems that it's currently out of print(?). CP:s are another matter though so I'll get some more in due time happy.gif

If I understood correctly, you put in the 2nd Xho and 2nd Lannisport, right?

I don't say it's wrong, but changin' a card against your Baratheon oppo doesn't give you the exact idea of what you fear the most...You can change the deck, but I sugget you not to put more conditional stuff like Xho ...

You should CHANGE the deck, but test it without adding any "conditional" cards against a single oppo... Just an advice gran_risa.gif

And I guess you noticed it, but to be sure...Lannisport is Unique, so you won't be able to get the "extra" power you mentioned. Just to be precise. gui%C3%B1o.gif

Hope I explained it well. ;)

No, that was my first (and only Xho) since he is in a CP. Actually, I missed that you had included him in your decklist when I built the deck preocupado.gif

I was thinking of using two Lannisports to draw one quicker and be able to get the power sooner. I know it's unique and that I just can have one in play at a time, but if it gets discarded I can play my second. But I decided against it since it can clog my hand and will probably be a useless draw. Better to use the slot for something else.

Good advice, I shall not tweak the deck to beat a specific house. It's not that fun either since we're just playing casual.

Thanks for all the useful help! I'll dive into the depths of the Targ deck soon...
